Today we’d like to introduce you to Aron Wiesenfeld.
Aron, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I drew comics as a kid and found a job drawing professionally at age 20. After five years, frustrated with the assembly line process of creating comics art, I attended art school in Pasadena, California. There, I discover a passion for oil painting using traditional techniques. After school, I painted in obscurity for five years before receiving any attention for my paintings. Since then, I have been a full-time painter. I still love the medium of comics and am still inspired by the stories.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I call my paintings “invented” because most of them are made without models or photographs. I try to remember things that inspired me, and I find that by working that way the subject is a more personal representation of how I feel about things than if I had painted them from life. I hope the viewer will become involved in the story of a painting. By telling only a part of the story, I want to allow viewers to finish it themselves.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
The art that I look to from history was always a step removed from current events, and I think that is the correct role of art. To comment directly on events can lean the work toward propaganda. It also tends to reduce art, which should make the realms of spirit, psychology, and style as it’s main concerns.
I don’t think government grants and things of that nature are important. Artists have always thrived in strong economies. To encourage artists, people should simply do what they already do, purchase the artworks that they love.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Much of my work is at Arcadia Gallery in Pasadena, CA. I will have a one-person show there in May of 2019. Also, I sell different types of prints directly on my website.
