Art & Life with Candis Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candis Smith.

Candis, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Candis has been fascinated all of her life with Fine Arts including Painting and Drawing. She studied Fine Art at Tulane University in New Orleans and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art. She is currently enjoying a rebirth and has entered into a new phase after many turns in the road along her career path which took her in and out of Corporate America. She renewed her Fine Art studies at the Glassell School of Art in Houston and the Chelsea Classical Studios in New York. She has traveled extensively to see many works of Art in such countries as France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom including Monet and the Dutch Masters. She is currently entering into a phase where she is seeking exhibition opportunities and markets for her artworks. Currently, she finds inspiration in the impressionistic works. Her art fulfills a personal need and represents her life’s journey. Her style is characterized by energetic brushwork applied in small, quick strokes which captures the light and color from nature. Recently she took a further step and opened her studio at Silver Street Studios in Sawyer Yards.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Candis’ artwork is characterized by her impressions of the natural world including figures, landscapes and wildlife. She begins her pieces with a study using sketches and photographs. Using layering of oils and glazes, she builds color compositions and forms which mimic the rhythms in nature. The final product is a compilation and evolution of color, line, and form. She is influenced by the natural balance in nature and relationships which spill over into her pieces.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Candis belongs to several artists groups including the Visual Arts Alliance and Woodlands Art League. She also volunteers with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston to give back to the community and stay connected. Her studio location at Silver Street encourages her to meet other artists and maintain a network to discover what other artists are doing and to discover opportunities.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
She is located at the Silver Street Studios, Ste 302, 2000 Edwards, Houston, TX 77007. Her studio is open every Second Saturday and during other monthly events at the Sawyer Yards. She has exhibited at juried shows and local art galleries.
