Brenda Guy on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Brenda Guy and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Brenda, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
As an entertainer, I love connecting with people and lifting their spirits through music—it truly feeds the soul. I perform both with a live band and as a solo vocalist using professional backing tracks. One of the biggest misconceptions about performing solo with tracks is the idea that you’re not a “real” musician unless you’re playing a physical instrument like a guitar, piano, keys or drums. That couldn’t be further from the truth—my instrument is MY VOICE. It may not be something you can see, but you can absolutely hear it, feel it, and it carries the same artistry, skill, and soul as any other instrument.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Brenda Guy—also known as The One Woman Show.

I am an Entertainer/Vocalist. I spent 21 years with the U.S. Treasury Department and 11 years with Harris County, but music has been in my heart since I was 9 years old. Seven years ago, I took a leap of faith and became a full-time musician—and I am loving every single moment of it. One morning I simply decided it was time to follow my passion. Music, to me, is essential and healing—it’s my way of embracing people. You never know what someone is going through, and sometimes the right song can be the hug they didn’t know they needed.

What makes me unique is my ability to connect with audiences from all walks of life. At my shows, we’re one big family—no matter who you are, where you’re from, or your religious belief. Whether you love Country, Blues, Motown, Rock ‘n’ Roll, or Pop, I bring music that allows people to live in the moment, reminisce about the good old days, and forget their troubles for a while. Fans often tell me I have a way of “capturing the crowd,” but the TRUTH is—it works BOTH ways. Their energy inspires me just as much as mine inspires them.

In addition to my solo performances, I produce Soul Divas Tribute, a high-energy homage to three legendary icons—Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Gladys Knight. This production features dazzling costume changes, dancers, a DJ, and two incredible guest entertainers who keep the energy alive between sets. The show has been receiving rave reviews and is truly an unforgettable experience.

At the end of the day, I am music, and music is me. The “sweetest melody over every verse”! I thank GOD every day for my gift of song and the joy it brings to share it with the world.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I am God-fearing, strong, independent, hardworking, determined, a motivator, and—most importantly—a loving person. Every one of these qualities was shaped by my mother. She taught me so much that I could go on an on about her……..but for the sake of the interview I’ll keep it brief (wink)! Though she is no longer here in physical form, she remains the greatest influence in my life.

Growing up in a single-parent home, she taught me that with prayer, determination, and hard work, I could have anything I set my mind to. She reminded me that not every battle is worth fighting, that sometimes you must tread carefully “when your hand is in the lion’s mouth,” and she showed me the art of knowing when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em. Most of all, she taught me the importance of keeping a family together against all odds. Raising five children alone could not have been easy, but she carried herself with such grace that she made it look effortless.

We may not have had everything we wanted, but we always had what we needed—and above all, we were loved. My mother shaped me into the woman I am today, and if you ask me, I think I’ve turned out pretty darn good. [smiles]

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Dear younger me—never stop believing in yourself. Every challenge will make you stronger, every setback will teach you something valuable, and every dream you hold close will find its way to you. Remember to continue to PRAY. Keep your faith, keep your heart open, and keep singing—even when no one’s listening. One day, that voice will touch hearts, heal souls and unite people!

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I truly believe in the old saying: “What you see is what you get!!” I DO NOT like guessing about who you will be from one day to the next! Further, I do not believe in getcha …. gotcha’s! I believe in being the REAL GENIUNE you! I mean like it doesn’t get any better than that! One of the gems in life is “being your true self” and it is so under rated! So I say to you – Go ahead and SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND!!!

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I’ve come to understand that people are people—and we’re meant to meet each other where we are, regardless of religious beliefs, who you voted for, race, gender, or background. God created us to be different, and that’s a beautiful thing. We don’t have to agree on everything—it’s okay to think differently. Each of us carries our own uniqueness, so the greatest gift we can give is to be respectful, love and embrace one another exactly as we are and exactly where we are in life.
