Krishawn Crockett

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started long before I actually knew that it was beginning. It started 7 years ago when I was playing college basketball. I played two in a half year and then I hit a bottom and ended up quitting the only thing I ever knew. When I left the basketball team going into my junior year, I experienced a level of depression that year that brought me to a place of surrenderance. I remember so vividly surrendering and crying out to God and telling him I was done with what I wanted for my life, and I was ready to submit to whatever He had for me. That was the day I had encountered God for the very first time. I was brought up in the church but the encounterment I experienced in my dorm room was me meeting God for the very first time apart from my family. As I journeyed forward throughout life I landed at a job at the boys and girls club as the gym director and I secured an internship at a youth ministry. At that time, I did not know God was preparing me for what I would be doing on a broader scale. As the gym director at the boys and Girls Club is when God gave me the vision that I would be using basketball as a tool to glorify him and minister his word, and that’s what I did. Soon later, my season in Wichita Falls came to an end, and I moved back to Houston. When I moved back to Houston, I began pursuing my basketball career again in the direction of going overseas. But they say, if you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans. As I trained myself to go pro, I again encountered kids. I was asked to train a kid, and soon after the word began to spread that training is what I did. As I encountered more and more of these kids my desires begin to shift from my own career to investing into their lives. In doing so, these kids became a huge part of my life. I just didn’t want to teach them the game of basketball, but I wanted to prepare them for everything I wasn’t prepared for mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally that drove me to quit. I became so driven that eventually one of the parents whose child I trained and mentored took a chance on me and invested in me. Which is now Xplosive Athletics Academy. When God blessed me with this gym, I vowed to do nothing more or less than to glorify God to the fullest extent through those gym walls. So, I do just that. The Bible says that Many are called, but few are chosen. When I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior, that was the call, but when I chose to submit to him, live for him, and glorify him in everything that I do., is why He chose me. Being chosen is a choice you make when you choose to submit. I’m doing so. What I thought would take me a lifetime didn’t take me long at all because I simply chose to submit to the will of God. He’s given me the privilege to begin traveling around the world with this ministry. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been in Panama with this ministry, and in Zambia, Africa. Which is him actually fulfilling my desire to go overseas with basketball but in the way that glorifies him more than myself. Who knows how far this may go? I am just the vessel. This is my story.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely was some struggles. I always say if it doesn’t challenge you every now and then while walking with God, then you may be walking with the wrong person. There were some seasons God was requiring a lot of obedience out of me. Whether that was a season of isolation devoted to just praying & fasting. Sometimes that was just simply trusting that He would do exactly what he said He would. Some days, I wanted to quit because the requirement often convinced me that he chose the wrong person, but He continually pulls me through… and I keep going because he’s entrusted me with too much. It’s not about me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a basketball trainer, but it’s only the smallest part of what the bigger picture. Basketball is just the tool; I use it to teach these kids the word of God, demonstrate his love, and reveal his glory. I host camps, clinics, events. I’m most proud of seeing my kid’s growth in their Spiritual lives. Every Friday we have youth Bible studies, and recruiting for that is always my priority over recruiting for actual basketball. I believe what sets me apart from most trainers is that I’m more concerned about the salvation security for these kids over their actual sport status. It doesn’t matter how great of a basketball player I make these kids; if they don’t know Jesus, I would have failed them.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is using this platform God has given me to impact as many people around the world as I can and to inspire them to submit to God wholeheartedly. I want to continue to minister to them that to be a believer of Christ is simply not enough, but everyday we must choose to be followers of Him by honoring him in all that we do, so that He can use us.
