Today we’d like to introduce you to Mya Keys.
Hi Mya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
LVLY CO, started when I was 17. I originally had dedicated my academic career to the medical field hoping one day to become an anesthesiologist. I didn’t think a career in the arts was possible. Let alone on that was going to provide security.
I began painting portraits at the time while attending Howard University in the fall of 2019. As my peers began to advance in their own fields I noticed that a degree in biology wouldn’t mean anything if that’s not what I truly wanted out of life. I returned home in the Spring of 2020 with a new hope for my business and life itself however, I wasn’t making as much progress as I thought.
Not until about February of 2023 have I felt the most confidence in my business as a painter and graphic designer? I am so excited to see what the rest of the year has in store for me personally as well as how much LVLY CO can grow.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We all want the fairytale of starting your business and it blows up and suddenly you are the most known in all of the city, however, that has not been the case for me.
I have noticed how important it is to listen to my own ideas. Finding your voice as an artist is one of the most important things you can do. This is where your clients trust you because they trust that you have faith in yourself.
I am just now finding this faith. I have always been artistic since a child, but I didn’t trust myself in my own capabilities. I didn’t put the work into my craft because of that lack of faith and noticed other creatives getting what I thought I wanted simply because I had the talent.
Talent alone is not enough. I have realized that now at 21, you have to put in the work and the faith to see the results you desire. I have constantly been complimented on my attention to detail, and my abstract way of thinking. It is now that I am putting my best foot forward saying here I am.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a painter and graphic designer. I specialize typically in portraits and abstract work. My paintings are typically more on the colorful side but I can paint whatever you want. I am most proud of my portraits and I think that’s what I am most known for.
I believe what sets me apart is my goal as an artist. I truly believe that everyone is capable of creating because creativity comes from love. I genuinely believe that we as people are made to love and come together to embrace one another in all of our differences. Hence the name LVLY or lovely.
