Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiara Johnson.
Hi Tiara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I remember being a child with big dreams of becoming a Registered Nurse. Growing up on the Northside of Houston, Texas, in the Greenspoint area, I came from humble beginnings that shaped who I am today. My mother was one of my greatest influences. She instilled in me the value of hard work and continuously reminded me that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to.
My mother was also a strong advocate for education and held me to high expectations. She ran a tight ship and made it clear that anything less than an A or B on my report card was not acceptable. While those expectations sometimes felt challenging as a child, I now recognize the valuable lessons behind them. She taught me discipline, accountability, perseverance, and the importance of investing in my education.
I attribute so much of my success to the foundation my mother built for me. Her encouragement and high expectations taught me to believe in myself, work hard, and never allow my circumstances to limit my dreams. Those lessons have continued to guide me throughout my nursing career and have shaped the way I encourage and support others in pursuing their own goals.
I excelled academically throughout my grade-school years and developed a strong appreciation for education at an early age. During high school, I challenged myself further by enrolling in dual-credit courses, which helped prepare me for the academic demands of college and gave me an early start on my higher education journey.
I went on to attend Prairie View A&M University, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After spending several years working at the bedside, I began to recognize that my passion extended beyond direct patient care. I found great fulfillment in serving as a resource and mentor to my colleagues, helping them build confidence and strengthen their clinical knowledge and skills. I also had the opportunity to precept nursing students during their clinical rotations at the hospital, which allowed me to discover how much I enjoyed teaching and developing future nurses.
These experiences ultimately inspired me to pursue graduate education and transition into nursing education. I returned to school and earned my Master of Science in Nursing in 2022. Since then, I have had the privilege of working as a Nurse Educator, where I am able to combine my passion for nursing, education, mentorship, and professional development. Becoming a nurse educator has allowed me to fulfill a purpose that began early in my career: empowering others through knowledge, encouraging lifelong learning, and helping prepare the next generation of nurses for success.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey to where I am today has not always been easy. There were moments when I struggled, particularly during nursing school. For the first time in my academic career, I found myself struggling to maintain the grades I had always been accustomed to achieving. There were exams I failed, care plans that were rejected, and more than a few tears shed out of fear that I might not succeed.
But I refused to let those challenges define my journey. I remained focused on my goal and leaned on my faith, praying to God for the strength, perseverance, and courage I needed to keep moving forward. By His grace and through my determination, I successfully completed nursing school without having to repeat a single course.
Looking back, I realize that I needed those difficult moments. They stretched me beyond what I thought I was capable of and ultimately helped shape me into a stronger, more resilient nurse. Those experiences taught me that struggle does not mean failure; sometimes, it is part of the process that prepares us for where we are meant to go.
Throughout those challenging days, I had to constantly remind myself that I was capable of doing hard things. Whenever I felt overwhelmed or questioned whether I could make it through, I would encourage myself by saying out loud, “Tiara, you got this!” Those words became more than just encouragement. They became a reminder to keep going, trust the process, and believe in myself even when things were difficult.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently work as a Nurse Educator, and I am excited to soon begin a new chapter with a new organization. In this role, I will have the opportunity to work with high school students who are pursuing the Nursing pathway at a Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school here in Houston.
What makes this opportunity especially meaningful to me is that it truly feels like a full-circle moment. I will be returning to the same school district where I grew up and, most significantly, to the very high school I graduated from. To now have the opportunity to return as a Nurse Educator and help inspire and prepare the next generation of nurses is incredibly rewarding. I am excited to share my experiences, encourage students to believe in their potential, and help them see that their dreams are possible, regardless of where they come from.
One of my greatest accomplishments is being a first-generation college graduate and the first and only nurse in my family. I am incredibly proud of how far I have come and of the foundation my family provided along the way. My journey is a reminder that humble beginnings do not have to limit your future. With hard work, perseverance, faith, and a willingness to pursue your dreams, you can create a path that not only changes your life but also inspires others to pursue theirs.
I am also a nurse entrepreneur, and I am continually exploring new ways to combine my passion for nursing education with my entrepreneurial endeavors. My goal is to create opportunities that make healthcare education and career development more accessible to young people who are interested in entering the healthcare field.
One of my long-term aspirations is to open my own healthcare training institute where I can prepare and empower young people for meaningful careers in healthcare. I envision creating an environment that provides students with the knowledge, hands-on skills, mentorship, and encouragement they need to succeed. Ultimately, I want to use my experiences as a nurse, educator, and entrepreneur to help develop the next generation of healthcare professionals and inspire them to see the possibilities that exist within this field.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
One of the things I appreciate most about Houston is its incredible healthcare presence, particularly the Texas Medical Center, one of the largest medical complexes in the world. Its presence creates an abundance of opportunities for individuals interested in pursuing careers in healthcare.
For aspiring healthcare professionals, being in Houston means having access to a wide range of educational programs, clinical experiences, career pathways, and employment opportunities across many areas of the healthcare industry. I believe this makes Houston a unique place for students and professionals who are looking to enter the medical field, grow their skills, and build meaningful careers in healthcare.
