Community Highlights: Meet Diana McShan of Diana McShan, Realtor with Keller Williams Southwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana McShan.

Hi Diana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Houston native, born and raised, and my journey has definitely not been a straight line, but looking back, I can see how every part of it has connected.
I started my career in property management, first as a leasing agent and eventually working my way up to Assistant Manager. From there, I transitioned into Human Resources, where I spent years working with people, solving problems, and learning the importance of communication and relationships.

And just like both of my parents, eventually entrepreneurship became a major part of my story. I became an owner and operator of residential boarding homes serving the elderly community, and that experience ultimately led me to start consulting and helping other aspiring boarding home owners navigate the process as well.

Real estate was another natural extension of what I was already doing. I had spent years working with homes, residents, families, business owners, and people going through major life transitions, so becoming a Realtor allowed me to bring all of those experiences together. Today, I help renters, buyers, sellers, and investors throughout the Houston area while continuing my work as an entrepreneur.

If there is one common thread throughout my journey, it’s people. I genuinely enjoy helping people figure things out, get from one place to the next, and accomplish something that may have felt overwhelming when they started. That’s actually where my real estate tagline comes from: “Real Relationships. Real Results. Real Estate.” The relationship has always mattered to me just as much as the result.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Some of the obstacles have been circumstances, some have come with entrepreneurship, and if I’m being completely transparent, some of the biggest obstacles I’ve had to overcome have been within myself.

My love for real estate actually began more than 21 years before I finally took the test to become licensed. I knew it was something I wanted to do, but back then, fear was my crutch. I could talk myself out of taking the next step by convincing myself that the timing wasn’t right, that I needed to know more, or that I just wasn’t ready yet. The thought of stepping out completely on faith, knowing I would have monthly expenses and no guarantee of monthly income, was overwhelmingly scary. Looking back now, I realize how much time I allowed fear and self-doubt to take from me. I didn’t trust myself, but more importantly, I didn’t trust God.

Entrepreneurship has brought its own set of challenges. Owning and operating businesses means there isn’t always someone there to tell you what the next move should be. You make decisions, you make mistakes, you learn, you adjust, and sometimes you have to figure things out while everyone else is depending on you to already have the answer.

I’ve also learned that growth sometimes means being willing to start over or become a beginner again. Transitioning from an established career in Human Resources into entrepreneurship and eventually real estate meant stepping outside of what was familiar and comfortable.

I think the biggest difference between who I was then and who I am today is that I no longer believe I have to wait until the fear is gone. For me, I realized that putting God first and trusting His plans for me is all I need to know. My job is to keep moving forward, do what I can, and remind myself often that I can only control what I do and leave everything else to Him. I can make a mistake and recover from it. Fear may still show up, but it doesn’t get to make my decisions anymore.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My real estate business is built around relationships first. I’m a Realtor with Keller Williams Southwest, serving Houston and the surrounding areas, and I work with everyone from renters and first-time homebuyers to sellers and investors. But here’s the thing…every Realtor on the face of the planet can say that. What matters to me is how I do it.

What I believe sets me apart is that I don’t approach real estate as simply a transaction…ever! Buying, selling, renting, or investing in property can be exciting, but it can also be confusing and overwhelming. I want my clients to understand what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and what their options are along the way. Sometimes that means asking the questions they didn’t know they needed to ask, catching something they may not have realized was important, or even telling them something they may not necessarily want to hear because I believe it’s in their best interest.

My background also gives me a different perspective on real estate. Before becoming a Realtor, I worked in property management and Human Resources, and I’m also a business owner with experience owning and operating residential boarding homes for the elderly. Through BH Consulting, I help aspiring boarding home owners navigate the process of opening and operating their own homes. Because of that, I understand property from several sides as an agent, property owner, operator, entrepreneur, and consultant.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. I want people to know that working with me isn’t about getting someone to closing as quickly as possible. It’s about helping them make a decision that makes sense for them, even when that means slowing down, asking more questions, or changing direction.

My goal is to build relationships that continue long after a transaction closes. That’s what “Real Relationships. Real Results. Real Estate.” means to me. The real estate may be what initially brings us together, but the relationship is what I hope lasts.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future really center around continuing to grow, but also becoming more knowledgeable and well rounded in the ways I can serve people. One of my next goals is obtaining my Mortgage Loan Originator license. For me, it isn’t simply about adding another title behind my name. I want a deeper understanding of the financing side of a real estate transaction so I can better understand the entire journey my clients are experiencing from beginning to end.

One thing that has become increasingly important to me is making sure people feel heard. I don’t want a client to feel like they’re being passed from person to person and that somewhere along the way, what they actually wanted got lost in the transaction. Whether I’m serving someone directly or working alongside the other professionals involved, I want to understand enough to ask better questions, recognize when something doesn’t seem right, and advocate for the client’s needs within my role.

I’m also looking forward to continuing to grow my real estate business and my work with boarding homes and consulting. I don’t necessarily know exactly what all of that will look like five or ten years from now and I’ve finally become okay with that. My plan is to keep putting God first, continue learning, take the opportunities He places in front of me, and make sure that whatever I build still centers around helping people.
