Today we’d like to introduce you to John Trejo.
Hi John, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Beeville, a small town in South Texas, and became the first in my family to attend college. I earned a scholarship to Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, where I pursued Athletic Training and still maintain my clinical license today. After graduating summa cum laude, I was invited to continue my education with a master’s in Exercise Physiology, focusing on biomechanics and sports performance. During that time, I published research in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national conferences, while also teaching courses like biomechanics, exercise physiology, and kinesiology as an adjunct professor.
After completing my master’s, I moved to the Houston area to gain hands-on experience in sports performance. Within a year, I became Head Athletic Trainer and Assistant Strength Coach at Texas Sports Medicine Center. There, I developed training protocols, performance analytics, and rehab programs that gave me the confidence and network to launch my own business—Houston Pro Performance.
Today, we specialize in sports performance, rehab, injury prevention, and pitching mechanics. Over the past 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of training 20 first-round draft picks, 50 major leaguers, and more than 100 professional baseball players. Our athletes range from youth and high school players to college and pro athletes. My credentials include being a Licensed and Certified Athletic Trainer as well as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not smooth—but every challenge taught me something valuable. Building systems that deliver consistent results took years of trial and error. Finding the right community of like-minded professionals was just as important. My vision was ambitious: create a space where athletes of all ages could train like professionals, with the same level of care, accountability, and attention to detail.
Education and certifications matter, but dedication is the real key. I’ve learned that staying coachable and maintaining a growth mindset are essential. A good coach leads by example—and that means being willing to learn, adapt, and grow every day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Houston Pro Performance, we focus on developing complete athletes through a professional approach to training. Our programs emphasize baseball and rotational sports, blending strength and conditioning, mobility, and arm care to help athletes perform at their best.
What sets us apart is our commitment to individualized development. Every athlete gets a plan built around assessment, progression, and long-term growth—the same standard used at the professional level. We’ve created an environment that builds confidence, accountability, and resilience. From youth athletes to pros, our mission is to deliver elite-level training and mentorship in a culture rooted in hard work and trust.
We don’t just train athletes—we develop them with purpose, helping them reach their full potential both on and off the field.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Be coachable. Seek out opportunities to learn and grow your skill set. Shadow professionals, intern, ask questions—because if you don’t ask, the answer will always be no. Stay current with research and keep learning, even if it’s one online class at a time. Education doesn’t stop after graduation.
If you’re pursuing an undergrad or graduate internship in sports performance, feel free to reach out. We’re approved to provide college credit for internships and capstone courses through major universities.
