Community Highlights: Meet Reginald Riggins of Dr. Riggins Psychological Services, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reginald Riggins.

Hi Reginald, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I earned my PhD in clinical psychology from Jackson State University in 2017 and I later became licensed in 2019. My career began at the South Texas VA Health Care System in San Antonio, TX. I served as the PTSD/Substance Abuse Psychologist from 2018 until 2020. I thoroughly enjoyed from providing care to our nation’s Veterans during that time. There is no doubt the experience made me a better clinician. In 2020, I decided to pursue private practice. There has definitely been both ups and downs throughout the course of operating your own business. However, I have learned to provide both exceptional care and develop an appreciation for marketing, scheduling, billing and networking. I am currently licensed in Texas, Florida, and Illinois. In addition, I am a PSYPACT Provider, which grants me the ability to see clients in over 40 states virtually.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I did experience struggles along my journey towards becoming a licensed psychologist. For example, I had to take our national licensing exam (e.g., EPPP) five times before receiving a passing score. That experience taught me how resilient and determined I was to achieve my dream to become a psychologist. Adversity can become embarrassing for some but I wear it as a badge of honor. I actually use it as an example in therapy to inspire my clients to move past their fears and distorted thoughts about what they are capable of.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the owner and operator of Dr. Riggins Psychological Services, PLLC. I hold active licenses in Texas, Florida, and Illinois. In addition, I have PSYPACT privileges that allows me to treat clients in over 40 states virtually. I specialize in the following presenting concerns: post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, relationship/marriage counseling, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders. I am one of the few African American Psychologists in the United States. I provide a unique experience and skill set to treat various conditions and populations. I want readers to know that I love what I do and I care about the success of my clients.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risk-taking is a natural part of life. You won’t always have the foresight to know how things will turn out. Anything worth having will include some level of risk. A life full of regrets can be cumbersome. I personally took a risk to pursue my doctorate. I moved away from my hometown of Chicago, IL and moved to Jackson, MS to begin my graduate studies. I didn’t know how everything would turn out but I had plenty of faith that it would. Risk taught me it’s not about getting to the end result…it’s about the journey and falling in love with the process of achieving your goal.
