Community Highlights: Meet Sade Perkins of Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sade Perkins

Hi Sade, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been a resident of Freedmen’s Town over two years now and I absolutely love this area. My family and I truly enjoy connecting to the rich history of the newly freed slaves who built this historic area. Unfortunately Freedmen’s Town is a food desert with the closest grocery store being about a 30-minute walk away. Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market aims to fill that need by providing local residents with access to fresh locally grown produce and other goods every Saturday from 9am-2pm. Our COVID-19 cautious outdoor market is perfect for safe shopping during the current pandemic. We hope to provide a space where neighbors can meet and get to know each other while building community and supporting small business entrepreneurs at the same time. Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market hopes to build upon the self-determined legacy of our ancestors who built this town fresh out of slavery over 148 years ago in 1865.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We had a rainy grand opening as well as several rainy markets in a row however congressman Al Green braved the weather and presented the market with a certificate of congressional recognition on November 28, 2020.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market?
