Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started over 23 years ago in my grandmother’s kitchen in Houston, Texas. I was simply experimenting with candle-making at first, not realizing it would turn into a lifelong passion and purpose. What began as a hobby quickly grew into Simply Scents Candle Company — a Black-owned, woman-owned, and veteran-owned business that now serves customers all over the country.
I started with $460 and a dream — pouring candles one by one, selling at local events, and connecting directly with customers. Over time, I built the brand on three principles: quality, authenticity, and community. Every product we make is hand-poured and triple-scented, designed to create lasting experiences, not just fragrances.
Today, Simply Scents has grown into a multi-million-dollar brand offering candles, body oils, aroma sprays, laundry detergents, and more. Beyond selling products, I focus on creating opportunities — from our fundraising program that helps schools and organizations raise money, to mentoring other small business owners through one-on-one coaching and events.
My story is about perseverance, purpose, and passion — proving that with consistency, faith, and a clear vision, you can turn a simple idea into something that changes lives and smells good doing it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of my biggest struggles were starting with almost no money, no business experience, and having to learn everything through trial and error. There were times I didn’t know how I’d keep the business going, but I refused to give up. As a Black, woman and veteran entrepreneur, I faced challenges getting funding and recognition, but those obstacles built my resilience. Every setback taught me how to pivot, stay consistent, and turn struggle into strength

What matters most to me is impact — creating something that inspires, empowers, and helps others win. I built Simply Scents not just to sell candles, but to show what’s possible when you don’t give up on your vision. I care about helping other entrepreneurs, especially women and minority business owners, see that they can build something real from the ground up too.
I also care deeply about community. Whether it’s through our fundraising programs, mentorship, or giving back, I want Simply Scents to always be a brand that pours back into people. Success means nothing if it doesn’t make a difference — and that’s what drives everything I do.
