Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Moon.
Hi Tammy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am the third of four girls raised by a single mother in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The 16th of 21 children born to my grandparents, my mother obtained a 6th grade education. She and her siblings were needed on the farm to assist her father, who was a sharecropper, no time for school. Doing the best she could, working as a cook and a maid, my mother received assistance with government housing and government financial assistance. Like I have heard many friends say, we did not even know how poor we were. We had food, shelter and a lot of love.
All three of my sisters quit high school, had multiple children who my mother helped to raise. Unfortunately, two became strung out on drugs, but are doing better today. School and several great teachers saved me. I was always an honor roll student, and there were teachers who took a special interest in me, giving me odd jobs in class and at their homes to provide financial assistance when I needed it.
After receiving a partial academic scholarship from General Electric Company, I completed four years of college in seven years, having to work while attending classes. I attended Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University for law school one semester after I graduated from the University of Houston.
I worked as an associate attorney for one year, as a partner with a former law school classmate for a few years, and then 27 years on my own as a solo practitioner before being recruited as a partner at Schlanger Silver law firm where I have practiced Family Law and Probate Law for the last 4 years.
Prior to joining Schlanger Silver, I became a board-certified specialist in Family Law and Child Welfare Law in the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Thereafter, served as the first black chair of the following organizations: Houston Bar Association Family Law Section, Burta Rhodes Rayborn Inns of Court and the Gulf Coast Legal Specialists.
I currently serve as a director on the Family Law Council for the State Bar of Texas Family Law Section and the first black Chair of the Texas Chapter of the American Academy of Legal Specialists, Secretary of the Texas Family Law Specialists and most proudly as the first black Chair of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
I believe that it is an honor to serve on these boards. To serve as the first black chair on many of them is not about how special I am, but about having the opportunity, working hard in those spaces and being recognized for the hard work.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely Not! So many people have asked me why I work on these boards or why I mentor or why keep returning to the law school to speak or to create continuing education classes there. The answer is always the same: I have to give back. I have to keep opening doors for other minorities who come behind me. It is not enough to be the first anything if you are the last!
I have been so blessed to be where I am in my life. All I have to do is close my eyes and think about my childhood and how I am even here. There were the teachers, sometimes parents of classmates, counselors who saw something in me and helped me when they could.
It is not and was not always easy to be the only black person in the room. However, I always felt like I deserved to be there because I worked just as hard as everyone else in the room.
I always felt like I could outwork my poverty in the class room and in any space where I was invited in. Did I get passed up, overlooked and denied. Absolutely yes. Does it stop me? Absolutely not. I cannot stop and allow the doors I may have opened to close behind me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Attorney, Partner at Schlanger Silver Law Firm?
I will be licensed as a practicing attorney in Texas for 30 years in November 2026. I specialize in Family and Child Welfare law, having specialized in Family in 2010 and Child Welfare law in 2019. I am known for being an honest, smart and tough attorney who works hard for clients who are in a very difficult time in their lives.
I think what sets be apart from others is that I understand clients who come from any walk of life. My childhood, trials and successes in life allow me to relate to their issues and struggles. They feel comfortable enough to hand over their burdens knowing I will fight for them as I have in life.
I want the readers to know that when they hire me, they get a well-respected, life-tested attorney who will not only fight for them, but who will also help them get through the perils of divorce and family issues with dignity and contentment.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the community, diversity and culture in Houston. There is something here for everyone.
The summers can be brutal, but if you are here long enough, you know that if you wait a few days, it will change!
