Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazzmine Woodard.
Jazzmine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a self-taught home cook who fell in love with cooking, baking and all things domestic during my teenage years. During college and grad school, I became the go-to person among my friends for meal-prepping, hosting dinners and such and promised to start sharing my recipes online as a way to stay connected after graduation. Dash of Jazz began in January 2015 and was largely comprised of recipes for the first year or so. I slowly started incorporating entertaining, DIY and local content and it is now more of a food-focused lifestyle blog with everything from travel to life hacks.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have had the typical challenges of any creator from copyright infringement to technical glitches to feeling like I’m way behind my peers. My advice for other young women is just to get started! Take the first step and commit to learning along the way. As a content creator, I am constantly attending workshops, watching webinars and experimenting in order to learn. There is no blogging or content creation major in college and it is still a fairly new industry so you have to be your own advocate and be diligent in educating yourself.
what should we know about Dash of Jazz? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My work is focused on food and home — I try to make the “domestic arts” more approachable and exciting to the everyday person with a busy schedule. I specialize in easy recipes and am known for dessert but you’ll find DIY tutorials, home decor inspiration, local eating, and more on my blog and social media outlets. I am most proud of recognition and feedback I get from my readers that my content is useful to and works for them. What sets me apart from others is that I approach everything I share with my audience’s needs in mind. I started my blog at the same time that I started working full time so I have always had to balance the two and I can understand the demands on a busy woman’s time and that not every person that comes to my website is a seasoned chef or extremely passionate about home decor and entertaining. Therefore, I try to simplify whenever possible and look for ways to the finished products not only look easy but be easy. I try to be very clear and uncomplicated in my writing and photography.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
My parents have always pushed me–not necessarily toward blogging or content creation but toward learning and independence. I feel that their support has been paramount. I am the oldest of five children and my mom was diagnosed with Lupus when I was very young, so I learned to help out around the house and manage myself in the kitchen pretty early on. Thankfully, it was something I enjoyed and in conjunction with my education, helped lay the foundation for what I’m doing now.
