Today we’d like to introduce you to Liza Frick.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Liza. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always loved fashion. I have been pattern mixing (not always successfully) since I was a little girl. My mom started blogging several years ago (you can find her Instagram here: @frickspicks) and you could call me her Instagram, husband. I decided to step out from behind the camera a little over a year ago. I was living in San Antonio, teaching English, which was very rewarding, but felt stuck. Fashion was my hobby and became my outlet. It was amazing to connect with people from all over and it became the thing my mom and I bonded over. I decided to take a leap of faith, quit my job, move to Houston and embrace whatever life brought my way. This leap brought me to the start of a new career, new friends, a focus on my blog and a newfound happiness. I guess the overall theme of my story is that it’s never too late to make a new start.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The last year of my life, before moving to Houston, was the hardest, personally. It was filled with fear, anxiety, loss and grief. I’ve made many positive changes and know that the hardest parts of last year were guiding me towards a new path in a new city. That new path has included running the blog and Instagram, That Blonde Rebel. Being a curvy girl trying to build a platform has not been easy. I’ve been trolled with some ugly comments, men send me unwanted and weird messages. However, I do believe there is more good out there than bad and I’ve been surrounded by such a kind, encouraging the community of woman of all sizes and backgrounds, celebrating one another. My advice for anyone looking to start a blog, take the leap and try it! Engage with your audience, determine what your platform is and run with it, whether it’s fashion, beauty, food, home decor, pick that niche and put your story out there!
what should we know about @thatblonderebel? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The blog primarily consists of fashion and reflections of an almost-thirty-year-old caffeine addict. I think the thing I am most proud of is the connections I have with the wonderful people who follow and engage with the blog/Instagram! I LOVE hearing from someone when they order something I’ve linked and they love it. Or, they try the restaurant I recommended. I like sharing my life with others and if something I do or buy benefits them, then great! I think the thing that sets me apart from the rest is that I offer another perspective, the curvy perspective. I can wear things from the regular lines out there and I can wear things from the curvy lines out there, which gives people who also look like me lots of options, which five years ago, may not have been available.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I have been inspired by so many women! My mom, first and foremost. She is strong, stylish and has taught me how to be confident, compassionate and generous. Iris Apfel who has shown us that age has no limits and to always have “hutzpah”. My Instagram fashion SHEroes lately have included Alex Michael May, Nicolete Mason, Kathleen Barnes and Krystal Faircloth. Overall, Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Ruth Bader Ginsburg are all strong female leads of their own lives!
