Conversations with Cainan Alves

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cainan Alves.

Cainan Alves

Hi Cainan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Brazil and have always been fascinated by cars. For me, they represent freedom and adventure. Growing up, my father’s love for photography captivated me; through his lens, I saw the world from different angles. This early exposure to photography sparked a similar passion in me. In 2016, life’s journey brought me to Houston, a city with a heartbeat powered by the sound of engines. It’s a vibrant car culture, and the size of the automotive market in the United States was nothing short of breathtaking for a car enthusiast like me. It wasn’t long before I noticed the opportunity to blend my two worlds: the vivid storytelling of photography and the dynamic realm of automobiles. This realization was the inspiration for my project. I sought to capture the essence of automotive beauty and power through my photography, celebrating the machines that drive us forward and the stories they tell. I began by taking photographs of the vehicles I admired, combining my skills behind the camera with my love for cars. What started as a hobby soon grew into something more—a project driven by passion. I spend my days capturing the essence of what makes each car unique, their stories, and their place in the vast Houston’s car culture.

Today, I stand on a journey of continuous learning and exploration, where every shot is a narrative, and every car has a legacy. It’s the merging of passion and place that has brought me here, and it’s what propels me into the next chapter. Throughout this journey, I’ve made countless friends and lived some unforgettable moments that every car enthusiast would dream of one day. Whatever comes next will come and will be a bonus.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the first challenges was the cultural shift when I moved from Brazil to Houston. I had to navigate and learn a new language, as well as adapt to a different way of life while staying true to my roots. In terms of my project, blending my passion for cars with photography was easier, but I haven’t gotten to where I want to be. Finances were also a hurdle. Photography equipment come at a significant cost. There were times when I had to be creative with the funds I had, which taught me to be resourceful and innovative.

Another struggle was building a network. In the car community, trust is key, and as an outsider, it took time to gain the trust of owners and enthusiasts to let me into this “new to me” world, but despite all these challenges, each struggle was a lesson that helped me grow and improve my craft. I’ve learned to be patient, to be persistent, and to use each setback as a steppingstone to something greater.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Before diving into this world, I worked in IT back in Brazil, which gave me a strong technical foundation. After moving to the States, I transitioned into marketing and communications, driven by a desire to connect with people and companies and share compelling stories. I’m now nearing the completion of my master’s degree in business, with a focus on marketing, branding, and strategy. This education has expanded my perspective and enhanced my ability to market not just products but experiences. My work is centered on marketing/media production, and for automotive photography, it’s more than just taking pictures of cars. I focus on capturing the essence of each vehicle I photograph—its design, its character, and the story it tells. I believe I’m known for my ability to showcase cars in a way that speaks not just to car enthusiasts but to a broader audience who might appreciate the intersection of its design and art.

What I’m most proud of is my journey of continuous learning and adaptation. Learning a new language, understanding a different culture, and integrating that into my work has been incredibly rewarding.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is connection—connecting with people, cultures, and stories. This stems from my own life experiences, moving from Brazil to Houston, learning a new language, and integrating into a different culture. It’s about bridging gaps, whether they’re between people or between people and machines. Certainly, connection is at the core of my values, and it extends to forming bonds with those who share the same interests. There’s a special kind of joy and growth that comes from interacting with fellow car enthusiasts and photographers. These connections have turned into friendships that are a source of continuous learning. We share knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, which enrich us both personally and professionally.

Why is this important? Because at the heart of it, whether it’s IT, marketing, photography, or anything else, it’s all about communication and understanding. By fostering connections, I can bring people together, evoke emotions, and perhaps change perspectives. And that’s the power of what I do—using my skills and passions to create something that resonates and brings people into a shared experience. These connections are a reminder that no matter our background or where we come from, we have common ground in our passions. They foster a sense of belonging and provide a space where we can collectively celebrate our interests. This is why connecting with people who share the same passions is so important to me—it’s about building a community where we all contribute, grow, and learn from each other.
