Today we’d like to introduce you to Hyaneyoung Olvera.
Hi Hyaneyoung, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up a huge pro wrestling fan. My grandfather got me into and it was something that we would watch together. I was 7 when I decided that I wanted to be a pro wrestler. When I was 20, I was studying at the University of Houston when I found Booker T’s Reality of Wrestling. I went to my first independent wrestling show and afterwards I asked Booker how I could sign up for his school. The rest is history. I have been training there for 8 years. Since then I have wrestled all over the United States, Japan, and United Kingdom. Last year I ranked #37 on PWI’s Women’s 150.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely never been a smooth road. You will hear “no” a thousand times before you hear a “yes.” It can be disheartening hearing many “no’s” but when you finally get a “yes,” it makes it all worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known as “The Renaissance Woman,” because I can do it all in the ring. In the ring, I think my psychology and aggression sets me apart. As well as my experience.
One of my biggest accomplishments is winning the Heart of SHIMMER title. SHIMMER is somewhere I dreamed of wrestling at, and winning a championship there meant it all.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Have a backup plan. When the pandemic started all wrestling shows stopped. No one was running. A lot of my peers do wrestling as a full-time job. All of a sudden they had no form of income. I was lucky because I had a job on the side.
