Today we’d like to introduce you to Mani Olaniyan.
Hi Mani, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always wanted to get into photography since I was a teenager but I couldn’t afford a camera then. Finally, I got my first camera in 2017 & started taking photos as a hobby. I ended up taking photos for people as a side-hustle in college till I realized I could take it further. It wasn’t until 2020 that I began to get into a more creative style of photography, thanks to the global lockdown — I had LOADS of time to kill so I took photos often in my apartment & surrounding areas.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think anyone who chooses to pursue any creative field instead of the typical corporate route chooses the un-smoothest road possible (I’m pretty sure un-smooth is not a word). I’ve experienced different challenges, mainly financially. There were months in the past (especially during lockdown) where I struggled to pay rent & afford to eat decent meals, but my art was popping for me personally. Things are a lot better now thank God & my art is getting better & better so I don’t stop.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m currently focused on doing things that make me excited & nervous. Lately I’ve been leaning into my strengths creatively by mixing design + photography & I’ve been enjoying the results. I want to continue to push beyond my comfort zone & evolve my work into more story/concept photography.
What does success mean to you?
To me, success is equal parts fulfillment & freedom.
Being fulfilled in what you do every day & having the freedom (financially, socially & creatively) to manifest experiences & opportunities for yourself & others.
