Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It been a road of hurtles and triumphs. Being a woman in hip hop who is openly gay has presented its own set of obstacles. Major labels turned me down based on image and not the quality of my music. Hip hop has been male dominated for decades and is finally opening its doors to women but those women seem to mostly be feminine and sometimes hyper sexualized .
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create clean hip hop and R&b infused music where I tap into a multitude of other genres. My music is about pushing through adversity and celebrating those wins. I’m known for lyrical bars over banging beats .I’m most proud of having fans that have been rocking with me for more than a decade . People that still have my cds and remember my lyrics from early songs . What sets me apart from other artist is my ability to be who I am and show others to embrace their gifts. I’m here to show people it’s never to late to fulfill your purpose
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Houston because it feels like a place where people of color can really thrive . So many dope artists and hustlers come from H Town and it’s affected hip hop culture in a major way . The least thing i like about the city is the fact that’s it’s too far from New York.
