Conversations with O’Nekki Cole

Today we’d like to introduce you to O’Nekki Cole.

Hi O’Nekki, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story didn’t start in a perfect place. For over 10 years, I struggled with drug addiction, along with the pain, instability, and challenges that often come with it. I also experienced what it feels like to be in difficult and unhealthy environments, which deeply shaped my perspective on life and the kind of support people truly need.

Recovery changed everything for me. Through faith, support, and a decision to want more for my life, I began rebuilding step by step. That journey wasn’t easy, but it gave me clarity, strength, and a deep sense of purpose.

Today, I’m in a place where I no longer just want to survive I want to give back. My goal is to open a faith-based women’s shelter that provides a safe, supportive environment for women and children who are in recovery or coming out of abusive situations. I want to create a space where healing, restoration, and hope are possible, because I know firsthand how life-changing that kind of support can be.

Everything I’ve been through has led me here, and I truly believe my purpose is to help others find their way to healing, just like I did.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Some of my biggest struggles came from past relationships and surrounding myself with people who didn’t share my values or goals. I often found myself trying to fit in with the wrong crowd, which only pulled me further away from the life I truly wanted.

During my recovery, one of the hardest challenges was being away from my family and my child. That separation was painful, but it also became a turning point for me.

Through it all, I made a decision that my struggles would not define or weaken my faith. I’ve learned that no one owes me anything but I owe it to my past to use my story to strengthen and encourage others who are walking a similar path. Those challenges helped shape the purpose I carry today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work in the dental field as a dental assistant, where I have the opportunity to support patients not only in improving their oral health but also in building confidence through their smiles. I take pride in creating a comfortable and welcoming environment, especially for those who may feel nervous or anxious about dental visits.

What I’m most proud of is the impact I have on my patients seeing their transformation, both in their smiles and their confidence, is incredibly rewarding.

What sets me apart is my ability to genuinely connect with people. I love interacting with others and taking the time to truly get to know them. I often say I’ve never met a stranger, and that mindset helps me build trust and make each patient feel seen, valued, and cared for.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First and foremost, I give all the glory to God, who has guided me every step of the way. I’m incredibly grateful for my support system My beautiful daughter Dai’Yonia, mother Camellia ,especially my sister, Kena Golston, along with Carol Smith and Rene Garrett, who have all poured into my life in meaningful ways.

I’m also thankful for my pastor, Marcus D Holman Sr, and his wife, Jaime Holman, for their leadership, guidance, and unwavering support. In addition, my entire OCTL Church family has played such a vital role in my journey.

I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without each and every one of them. Their love, encouragement, and belief in me have made all the difference.
