Conversations with Sonia McLaughlin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonia McLaughlin.

Hi Sonia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I front and manage a Bossanova and Tropicália band located in Austin, Texas. I started the musical project back in 2019 after moving back to Austin from São Paulo, Brazil and finding that I missed Brazilian music and culture. So, I brought it back with me!

This would not have been possible though without finding the most amazing musicians and friends to play with me.

Dan Peters plays the piano, Vijay Meunir plays the guitar, and Bruno Vineznof plays the drums/pandeiro.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It is never a smooth road when it comes to being a musician! We’ve gone through transitions in the band, with direction, with goals but that is pretty normal and we’ve been able to find resources and support that keep things moving forward, thankfully!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Brazilian American singer and song writer from Austin, Texas. I am also a humanitarian and illustrator. One of the proudest moments since starting the band is when we received a Austin Live Music Fund grant from the City of Austin to support us with recording, rehearsal space, advertising, and marketing. I think what sets me apart is that I am naturally creative, but also super organized and resourceful which probably comes from years of working in nonprofits. I think this combination can be really powerful and I am practicing keeping both lenses on.
