Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Fallas.
Hi Adriana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I moved to Houston, Texas, in 2014. Although I dedicated my career to business and management, pottery has always been part of my life and recently it’s become a much greater force of self-expression.
The experimentative quality of art making drives me to create. I find joy in the process of searching for new ways to fulfill my curiosity. For me, art is a mental exercise where I practice my ability to be ok with failing and lack of control.
Part of my process is to contemplate and meditate about the art pieces I want to bring to life, and that happens at all times even when I am working on other tasks.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has never been a straightforward road. Life usually gets in the way. I always felt that I didn’t have enough time until a couple of years ago when I retired. Since then, I was able connect full time with my pottery work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My roots and identity as a Jewish Latin woman and mother bring me to each piece. My inspiration evolves around elements that represent my identity. Judaica art, Kiddush cups, Pomegranates, Rosh Hashanah and Passover Seder Plates, and Menorahs for Chanukah are essential symbols in my expression of Judaism. Finally, Mate is a South American caffeine-rich infused drink which is drunk in specialty cups called Mates that I enjoy making.
My ultimate goal is to work in experimentation and finding new techniques for self-expression.
How do you think about happiness?
Knowing that my pottery pieces beautify the homes of their new owners gives me so much joy.
