Today we’d like to introduce you to Alysa Campos.
Hi Alysa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Art consumes my entire life I don’t think there’s ever been anything else I wanted to do. When I was younger all I wanted to be was an artist. In college I received my BFA in Graphic Design. I graduated in the pandemic so jumping into the traditional work force was a bit of challenge. So in my spare time I started illustrating and designing my own stationary products and that’s how Al’s Diseno was born. I’ve been doing markets and wholesale since then and have had the pleasure of working with multiple small businesses. I’ve also put my degree to good use as a freelance designer and in-house designer at a private college. Lately though I’ve returned to my childhood dreams to be a painter. I’ve started building my portfolio in aims to apply to residencies and grants and build a reputation with Houston local galleries. I dream big you never know what will happen unless you go for it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I became a mom like most my whole identity changed. I was always classified as the artsy one and suddenly I had a whole little human depending on me leaving little time to create. It’s beautiful being consumed in motherhood and also it leaves you wondering if that’s all you’ll ever be. My son is two now and I find that a lot of my sense of wonder and inspiration comes from him. He’s experiencing everything for the first time and seeing that up close is reminds you how incredible mundane things can be. He’s taught me how to pause and be present and that’s really shaped a lot of my creativity
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an illustrator, graphic designer, Painter. I’ve always had trouble niching down. Jack of all trades if you will.
I’m probably most known for my illustrative work in my small business. I make colorful and funny stationary products like stickers and greeting cards.
But I’m most proud of being a painter. It’s where I find the most joy.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think that because a lot of my work is really bright and colorful people are surprised when they hear that I’ve struggled with things like depression and anxiety. A lot of my illustrations are playful and so I think people assume I’m a really bubbly person. I would say my paintings are defiantly accurate to how I feel
