Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj NIMBUS.
Hi dj , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved here as a Mechanical Engineer to work for Cooper Cameron in Waller Tx. I was laid off 6 months after arriving, so I was faced with the decision to create my own destiny as entrepreneur or look for employment elsewhere. I chose the entrepreneurship route, and from that my first two businesses were born, Superior Audio Solutions & dj NIMBUS. My background in music began in 1988 as a trombone player, who also started collecting music by recording radio shows in 1985. Consequently, my music collection became the center point of most of my earned money in my high school & college years, which later would become the foundational tools of my dj career.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The entrepreneur road is never a smooth ride, as it required building a portfolio / resume with no prior history in paid music service providing in my past, whether that be radio or club. Also, Houston is not a city that had a large value in “DJ” culture and alternative urban music as the midwest and east coast did, namely in House Music. Being a straight black dj playing a music born in the black / latin & queer community in the south did not present itself with a ready made audience either, so there was cultural challenges to overcome in a state that had been sold the idea that house music was an European invention and that I was not doing it justice, although I grew up in Austin and was exposed to a very broad base of music across the board. Another adjacent challenge was crossing the racial barriers to places who place more emphasis on the aesthetics of who could / can play this type of music in their spaces, instead of the experience and skill over the years, to which progress has been made, but some of these challenges still exist to this day.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional DJ, often referred to as The Ambiance Architect for shaping and molding the atmosphere through the medium of music. In that space, I have garnered a reputation for creating memorable moments seamlessly blending a wide spectrum of songs unique to each event I perform at. My impromptu creativity and technical expertise plus consistency over the last 24 years has set me apart from many others in this field.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a pretty well rounded individual. I wanted to be a socialite but was also very to myself as well. I read a lot, and was always into music and technology, so I spent a lot of time delving into both of things. I was heavily into nature and science as well, so I spent a lot of time outside, as Austin had a lot to offer in that way where we lived especially.
