Today we’d like to introduce you to Iyana Admasu.
Hi Iyana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Today I go by The Mixy Introvert or “Mixy” due to my online presence, but to get to where I am now, took years of offline work and development. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a creative who spent majority of my time pouring into others’ visions, dreams, and businesses. Through these experiences, I became a self-taught graphic and web designer and discovered my love for luxury travel.
After a major change in career goals, I broke into tech in 2020 during the pandemic, moving from my hometown of Philly to Indianapolis for a program. I thought I had it all figured out until not even a few months after the move, the first Covid shutdown happened. I was in a boring city with no friends family, newly without a job, and I had to face the reality that I packed up and moved just to attend classes online. That year was rough to say the least. I experienced what it was like to truly be alone in an unfamiliar place. As tough as that year was, I learned a lot about myself and what I was capable of.
A year later, and program completed, it was off to Texas after manifesting a job offer in Houston. Although I was excited to be in a lit city, I spent majority of my first year in the house instead of exploring Houston, and I kept quiet about my move. I realized I didn’t want to relive the experience in Indianapolis, and it was time to explore Houston. Like many others, I didn’t know much about Houston or where to go.
Fast forward to October 2022, I launched my platform @themixyintrovert on TikTok and Instagram to focus on exploring Houston and beyond. I share hotspots, experiences, food, and travel through the lens of an introvert who likes to get outside (sometimes lol). I wanted to create a space that was inclusive to all but made for those who look like me. I thoughtfully and authentically share my experiences all the details and show my audience the vibes.
Aside from this, I have become known for sharing the weekend moves in Houston every Thursday on TikTok and have been focusing on creating a community that is outside of the internet and social media. I have a group chat of over 700 members that allows people to connect as majority of my follower base are not Houston natives, and I curate community events.
My goal is for people to have a safe space to meet others, explore Houston together, and be surrounded by good vibes. I just hit year one, and I’m excited to see what year 2 will bring!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Content creation looks beautiful when you see the final product but the process of creating and maintaining a platform can be challenging.
As many creatives know, so many things can throw off the creative process. For me, one of my biggest struggles is balance. I have a full-time career outside of content creation, personal relationships to maintain, and I try to squeeze in time for myself. Creating this platform has forced me to work on my myself, mentally and physically, to be able to operate at my standard and excel in all aspects of my life. So yes, it’s stressful at times, but growth is never comfortable.
Another struggle is the transition between posting for fun vs as a brand. I’ve had to learn a lot from trial and error. Making content for other people to post for their business vs for your own brand is very different. I’m my own organizer, planner, outreach person, assistant, photographer/videographer, editor, and model. With any business, you want to see results and success, so when posts don’t perform well that I worked really hard on, that sucks lol.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a creative all around. I love the arts, but majority of my creative expression is through content creation. Aside from content creation for my own brand, I also operate as a social media manager, I offer “content only” packages where I work with brands and/or events to capture and create content solely for their use in marketing their business. I also offer freelance UX/UI, Graphic Design, and Web Design services.
What I’m most proud of has been my success in converting my online community into a physical community that shows up time and time again when I host events. I started in June and have already hosted 9 events. I have a recurring happy hour, but the other events can be anything from fitness to brunch to an outdoor active activity. My events are branded as “show up solo friendly” because I want to encourage people to step outside of their comfort zone and be in a space to connect without the fear of showing up alone. My favorite thing is when people tell me they have made friends after attending my events. That’s all I want.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
A huge part of my success, and success in general, is discipline and consistency; and I’m still working on that. Although my platform’s focus is about exploring Houston and sharing my travel experiences, at the root, I’m very big on mindset and mental health. Taking care of yourself should be #1. That is what gives you the strength to move forward. Believing you can do something and then taking actionable steps to work towards it has been the way I’ve succeeded thus far; so I created something that combines these with a tool that can help content creators and businesses with a social media presence.
My planner promotes balance of personal life, work, and content creation. With a focus on reflection, habit forming, planning, and budgeting, it’s meant to be checked daily and promote the keys to success.
The 2024 release is coming soon, so be on the lookup!
