Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Nguyen.
Hi Kim, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up making my own mums and have always loved crafts, creativity, and bringing ideas to life. As a young adult, I started making mums for my nieces, and nephews simply because I enjoyed creating something special for them. When my boys reached high school, I began making mums for them and their friends. Before long, people started asking, “Where did you buy that mum?” That’s when I realized there was something special about what I was creating. What started as a hobby and a way to celebrate my family’s milestones naturally grew into Queen of Mums. What began with making a few mums for my own kids has turned into a creative business that allows me to share that same excitement, tradition, and personal touch with so many other families. It truly has been a blessing to see how Queen of Mums has grown and continues to expand. One of the most special parts of this journey has been being able to partner with my sister and create mums together. It has made something I already loved even more meaningful by turning it into a family experience. I’m incredibly grateful for how far Queen of Mums has come. What started as something I simply loved doing has grown into something that brings joy to students and families throughout the homecoming season and I’m excited to see where this journey takes us next.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! It has definitely been a journey filled with trial and error, and a whole lot of glue gun burns. I’m honestly surprised I still have fingerprints! Mum making has evolved so much from when I was growing up. The techniques, braiding, designs, and styles are constantly changing, so there’s always something new to learn. Every season brings new challenges, but also new ideas and opportunities to grow. I’m still learning, experimenting, and evolving with every season. One thing I’ve learned is that there’s always a lesson to take away from each experience and that’s what keeps me excited and inspired to keep creating.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Queen of Mums is all about creating something that feels special and personal. I make custom homecoming mums that are designed around each student, their school, their personality, activities, their style, and all the little details that make them who they are. What I love most about making mums is the creativity behind each one. I’m always trying new techniques, braids, textures, and ideas to make each mum unique. I don’t want to just make a beautiful mum; I want to create something that makes a student feel excited, celebrated, and proud to wear it.
I’m probably most proud of how Queen of Mums has grown from something I started for my own boys into something that so many families now trust me to create for their special homecoming moments. There’s something really special about being invited to be part of those memories. What sets me apart is the love and personal touch I put into every mum. I take a lot of pride in the details, but I also genuinely care about the person I’m making it for. Every season, I’m still learning, experimenting, and finding new ways to make each mum better than the last. For me, it’s not just a business, it’s something I truly enjoy creating and sharing with others.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
One of the things I’ve been most grateful for is the amazing community of mum makers. There is such a strong sense of sisterhood within the mum community. People are genuinely willing to share ideas, best practices, new techniques, and even their favorite places to find mum supplies. I’ve learned so much simply by connecting with other mum makers and being open to learning from them. We support each other, celebrate each other’s successes, and share what we’ve learned along the way. That community has played a huge role in helping me grow, evolve, and become the mum maker I am today. My biggest advice would be to find your community, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and be willing to learn from others. You don’t have to know everything when you start, and honestly, you never stop learning. I’m still learning, still trying new things, and still inspired by the talented women around me.
