Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Born out of the COVID-19 pandemic that paralyzed the world, Favelas emerged in Chicago in March of 2020. Our sound is characterized by a vibrant fusion of rhythms, including rock, punk, ska, jazz, cumbia, and bossa nova. Along the way, we’ve had the incredible opportunity to share the stage and open for legendary bands like Molotov, El Tri, Maldita Vecindad, Gondwana, Inspector, and Los Caligaris, shaping the journey that brought us to where we are today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Launching a band in March 2020 meant navigating the immediate isolation, uncertainty, and complete standstill of the live music scene caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Finding ways to write, collaborate, and keep the creative spark alive while the world was locked down presented a massive initial hurdle.
Beyond those early pandemic days, building a multi-genre band that fuses rock, punk, ska, jazz, cumbia, and bossa nova came with its own set of growing pains—figuring out how to cohesively blend such distinct musical worlds, breaking into the local Chicago scene, and establishing momentum from scratch. Turning those early challenges into a driving force is what ultimately earned us the opportunity to share the stage with incredible acts like Molotov, El Tri, Maldita Vecindad, Gondwana, Inspector, and Los Caligaris.

We specialize in a high-energy, genre-bending sound that seamlessly fuses rock, punk, and ska with the rhythms and warmth of jazz, cumbia, and bossa nova. Born in Chicago during the COVID-19 lockdowns in March 2020, we are known for breaking conventional boundaries and bringing diverse musical worlds together under one banner.
What we are most proud of is our resilience and the unforgettable milestones we’ve achieved along the way. Turning an isolating moment in time into a vibrant musical journey led to the incredible opportunity to share the stage and open for legendary bands.
What sets us apart is our refusal to stay in a single lane. By bridging Latin rhythms with punk and rock energy, we’ve carved out a unique space in the scene that reflects both our diverse backgrounds and our relentless drive to keep evolving.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes us happiest is the raw energy of connection whether it’s locking into a groove on stage, blending disparate musical worlds like punk, ska, and cumbia into a single song, or looking out into a crowd and seeing people let go completely.
Why? Because music was our anchor from the very beginning. Born out of the isolation of March 2020, we started Favelas as a way to bridge distances when the world felt entirely disconnected. Being able to turn that initial uncertainty into shared moments of celebration especially alongside legendary acts who inspired us reminds us why we started playing in the first place. That exchange of energy is everything.
