We recently had the chance to connect with DJ Smoov and have shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think that main thing that is misunderstood about my business, is all I do as Female DJ is push buttons and dance. Unbeknownst to them, I contribute hours of time organizing my music files, spending thousands of dollars on equipment, and losing sleep due to anxiety. I love being a DJ and selecting music to create an experience for the venue and customers.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My stage name is DJ Smoov. I’m originally from Dallas, Texas and a 23 year Army Veteran. I am a female DJ in Houston, Texas and I consider myself an Open Format DJ. An Open Format DJ means I am not bound by the confounds of a particular genre. What makes my show unique to other DJs, more specifically female DJs, is my musical selections take you on a journey. My genre of preference, is RNB or Neo-Soul. I purposely choose songs that have gracefully been popular over the years to new releases to “B” selections that may not have reached high on the charts. I also ensure to read the crowd, knowing who I have in the building. I pay attention to who sways or sings with the music.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My Father and Grandfather taught me the most about work. Those men never stopped getting up and going to work. I never heard either of these men complain about work or having to work. They taught me. at an early age to “do what you have to do, so you can do what you want to do”. Meaning, take care of your responsibilities initially, then make time for what you want to do. My Father taught me to be on time for each job and to do my absolute best to complete the mission.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
One kind thing I could say to my younger self would be, you are loved, valued, worthy, talented and blessed.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
This question stood out to me because I often get this question asked many times, until people get to know me. I am a firm believer about what you see is what you get. My personality matches my persona. I am DJ Smoov and she is me.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most at peace when I am at home listening to music or Reddit stories. I love being at home relaxing in my robe, discovering new music, and imagining how the crowd would react at my next DJ set.
