We recently had the chance to connect with Doc Greene and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Doc, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Would I hire me? The answer is yes, because I want to hire someone for whom its not just a job or piece of work that must be completed. I would hire me because I am passionate about what I do. Where most workers would thing the job is done and want to pick up the check, I am just beginning. Now is the time to work on the small details that make the difference between something that works, or something that truly performs. When I put in an entertainment system I don’t want it to just turn on, I want it to exceed expectations, that is to be truly exciting. I want it to bring joy and excitement to your life. My favorite comment and the one I most hear, is “Wow, its better than I expected it to be. So that is why I would hire me. I have been doing it for a long time now, but every system still gets me excited. I love what I do.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I started in the home entertainment business when TVs were 19″ big and Stereos were in the other room. The two never went together. I loved sound and felt there should be more. So I took my TV apart and connected the speaker wires to an external wire and plugged it into my stereo. For the first time, TV sound had bass. True low end. It also had highs. because I had good two way stereo speakers. Everyone in my family love it. Movies were amazing but even network Sit Coms were more fun. watching TV become an event. More fun than ever. Of course today the TV is 80″ and instead of 2 speakers we have 11. Time have changed. Now you have a big TV by the pool with concert quality sound and its water proof. Now you have one app on your phone or a single wand remote to control the entire system with everything form regular off air HDTV to any of a dozen apps like Net Flix, Amazon Prime, You Tube and Spotify. We are also the kings of WiFi because all of the entertainment today is streamed to your TV, or your iPad or tablet. It doesn’t matter what room or outdoor space you occupy, The entertainment is there. Nobody does it like we do it, and nobody offers more entertainment for less money than we do. That is why experience counts.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Someone once said, behind every great man is a great woman. That is true. Having been married to a great wife for many years has made it possible for me to be the best me that I can. She allowed me to study and learn all the things I needed to know to be successful in this business. It took a few years to really get to where I needed to be to make this company successful. She stood by me in the tough times until we made it. I recommend marriage to all my friends. It makes life great.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Truly it wasn’t a matter of giving up, it was a matter of facing the end. I remember 3 distinct times in my life when I said, well this is it. This is how if ends. Those three times I had run out of work, and I was out of money, and I was out of time. I wonder if the children of Israel felt that way as they heard pharaoh’s army thundering down on them while they faced the Red Sea? That is when God came through. A big job came in and me and all of my employees lived to work another day. It really makes you understand that GOD is there, and he really does care.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
IF you don’t’ have time to do right now, When will you have time? IT sometimes take longer to do the project right. There are almost always times when hidden things surprise you and it takes a little extra work to fix it. It is times like these for me, when I realize its not as important to make a profit as it is to meet the clients expectation. So I will always recommend that you spend the additional time because it most likely will pay you back in the future.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
My clients have come to know that I will go the extra mile to make them happy. They know that for me its not always about the money but about meeting the expectation. Also they know that my company is often a “One Stop Shop” I will do the extra things that many would not do. They know that while others look for reasons not to perform, I look for solutions to the unexpected. I am willing to the extra things that make the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. Most companies don’t do these things.
