Exploring Life & Business with Tanika Mcgill of Humble Care Home

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanika Mcgill.

Hi Tanika, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory
Growing up my mother and I would spend every summer in Beaumont, Texas. visiting her brother. He was paralyzed from the waist down from an injury leaving him bed written. My Uncle was married and his wife became his fulltime caregiver. She became confined to their home and never had time off for herself. So, in the summer months my mother would take over for her and become the caregiver for my Uncle. Witnessing those moments of my mother in action as a caregiver developed my interest in healthcare. Fast forwarding, I received my Bachelors of Science degree in Healthcare Administration from Texas Southern University. I worked various positions in healthcare and moved into the senior living industry and discovered I enjoyed working with seniors. I’ve witnessed good and bad situations while working in the senior industry. Many seniors become vulnerable like children and get taken advantage of. Many encounters elder abuse which includes physical, emotional, sexual abuse, exploitation, neglect, and or abandonment. The sad part is the abusers are sometimes their own family member or a staff member at a facility. After seeing this situation multiple times, I wanted to do something to help. I wanted to create a warm and safe environment for seniors to live comfortably and worry free. It’s something about seniors that I love, there stories, advice, wisdom and sense of humor. That’s how I started Humble Care Home.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s never a smooth road for a start-up business. You always second guess or question yourself about EVERYTHING! My struggle along the way was finding a work-life balance and spending more time with my family. I worked tirelessly, and wanted to take on full control in all aspects of my business. After being away from my family, I realized I could not do everything on my own, I had to seek outside help and hire staff and other services. I had to find other caregivers that are just as passionate as I am and that I can trust when I’m away from work. With a great support system including my mentors and my staff makes my work-life balance easier.

We’ve been impressed with Humble Care Home, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Humble Care Home is a personal care home that helps take care of your aging loved ones and ensure their wellbeing. We are a small environment and accept a smaller number of seniors compared to most and our ratio is one to four, allowing us to provide one on one care. A summary of our services includes, home cooked meals, laundry/linen services, special diets and feeding assistance, bathing, grooming, and dressing assistance, hair/skin care, and medication management. All services are delivered on a 24 hour continuous schedule. We offer respite care services which gives caregivers a temporary rest, short term and long term stays.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The senior living industry will always be a continuous expansion. By the year 2030, all baby boomers will be the age 65 or older. That means there won’t be enough of facilities to house them. We need more senior living homes to be available to assist seniors. They live a healthier and happier rest of their lives in a home environment setting that’s family-like. I hope to expand my property or purchase more property to house more seniors.
