Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Pope.
Hi Janet, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
If you had asked me 20 years ago what my life would look like, I would’ve painted a pretty different picture than the life I’m currently enjoying.
I may have expressed the desire to live in a major city, but I hadn’t fallen in love with Houston’s diversity and foodie culture yet… I would have talked about working in tech and helping organizations solve complex problems but what I didn’t know then was that work would be a stepping stone for what became a career partnering with leaders to build programs that strengthen communities. I never imagined that serving on my college’s Student Government Minority Council would equip me with insights and skills to lead corporate Employee Resource Groups. I wouldn’t have envisioned that what has become some of the most meaningful work of my life, would grow out of conversations about health challenges. As I began sharing my experiences, women started sharing their stories with me. Many were also navigating health concerns, financial strain, or emotional stress with and without support. I saw the same pattern again and again, particularly among Black and LGBTQ+ communities. We weren’t lacking resilience, we needed access to trusted resources and opportunities to have honest, safe, valuable conversations to support our long term wellbeing.
The realization of this need, the lessons I’d learned in working on corporate responsibility, inclusion, and engagement programs for over a decade, and the joy we’d cultivated within my own social network became the spark for The GOOD Lounge. Using what I understood about building communities, fostering engagement, and creating meaningful connections throughout my career, I created something that could be applied beyond the workplace. The GOOD Lounge was created to be a welcoming space for learning, connecting, healing, and sustainable communal growth.
Ultimately, I want to help communities navigate important wellbeing challenges together and have fun while we are doing it. While I couldn’t have envisioned founding a nonprofit 20 years ago, 11 year old me knew that I would be doing something to help women and minorities one day, based on a essay I wrote in middle school. I hope that kid is proud of what The GOOD Lounge has become and I’m really glad that buried dream never died.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like many nonprofit founders, one of our biggest challenges has been funding.
For our first five years, the contributions of our individual donors and strategic partnerships have carried our work forward. I’m grateful for their support and belief in our mission. Donor support has enabled us to provide access to expert-led conversations, elevated networking experiences, wellbeing workshops and tools.
As The GOOD Lounge expands, I’ve made thoughtful decisions about programming execution and determining how to grow while staying true to the impact we are working to drive. I am also balancing building The GOOD Lounge while managing a demanding corporate career, which means that I’m in a season of nonprofit planning after work hours and on the weekends. Every time I’ve thought that maybe it’s all too much to take on, I hear from someone who really appreciated attending an event or a partner reaches out about an opportunity that supports a lot of people. Each time I receive feedback or demand for aligned partnerships that can drive impact, I find a renewed sense of energy that keeps me moving forward!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The GOOD Lounge?
The GOOD Lounge is a nonprofit focused on sustainable wellbeing. Our mission is to connect women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ communities to trusted emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing resources and practical tools.
We envision a world where wellbeing is accessible, sustainable, and rooted in collective joy, where people feel seen and supported. We create intentional, community-centered experiences where people can learn from experts, connect through shared experiences, and build meaningful relationships and partnerships. We believe wellbeing should feel safe, practical, and deeply human.
Over the past five years, we’ve engaged hundreds of people through virtual and in-person programs, with participants reporting stronger community connections, greater self-awareness, and broader awareness of practical tools they can apply in everyday life. We’ve also intentionally invested in women-owned, Black-owned, and queer-owned businesses as part of our commitment to community wellbeing.
What I’m most proud of is how people feel when they leave a GOOD Lounge experience. Participants consistently tell us they feel valued, informed, and empowered to take action in their lives. Our Barrels & Brew collaborations and Wellness Reset activations are amongst participants’ favorites.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Our success is anchored to creating something that genuinely improves our human to human connections. As loneliness and social disconnection continue to impact wellbeing outcomes, access to welcoming community spaces has become increasingly important.
The principles that have guided my journey are: staying grounded in our purpose, being realistic about my strengths and where collaboration is needed, and remaining intentional about the experiences that I’m seeking to create… in ways that can sustain. Success isn’t singularly about achieving goals that myself or the board has set for the organization’s growth. As we evolve, agility will also need to remain a part of our equation for success.
