Exploring Life & Business with J&M Jewelry of J&M Jewelry

Today we’d like to introduce you to J&M Jewelry.

Hi J&M, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
J&M Jewelry was established in 2005, starting primarily with engagement rings and providing high-quality jewelry directly to consumers. Over time, we began expanding into other areas of the industry, from custom design and manufacturing to wholesale, private label, and other specialized jewelry services.

We’ve always worked by appointment, which has allowed us to give our clients a more private and personalized experience. That ended up benefiting us during COVID because we were already set up to work with people individually rather than relying on a traditional retail environment. Like many businesses, that time also pushed us to think differently about how we could serve our clients and continue evolving.

The business today looks very different from where we started. Engagement rings are still an important part of what we do, but we now work with both individual clients and businesses and offer everything from custom design and manufacturing to consulting, appraisals, repairs, wholesale, and digital solutions. A lot of our growth has happened gradually, seeing a need, finding a way to meet it, and continuing to build from there.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road definitely hasn’t always been smooth. J&M was still a relatively young business when the 2008–2009 financial crisis hit, and that was one of the first major challenges we had to navigate. During that time, we shifted more of our focus toward bridal jewelry, which ultimately became an important part of the business.

Since then, there have been plenty of changes in the industry, from the economy and technology to the way people shop for jewelry. COVID was another major adjustment, although our appointment-only model ended up working in our favor. We had already been operating that way for years, so we were able to continue providing the private, one-on-one experience our clients were accustomed to.

A lot of J&M’s growth has really come from adapting along the way. We started with a strong focus on engagement and bridal jewelry, and as the industry and our clients’ needs changed, we continued exploring new areas and adding new capabilities. That’s a big part of how J&M became what it is today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
J&M Jewelry is a manufacturer, wholesaler, and designer of fine jewelry, working with both private clients and businesses. Over the years, what we’re able to offer has grown quite a bit. Today, we work on everything from custom jewelry and engagement and wedding rings to manufacturing, wholesale and private label, appraisals, and more.

What sets us apart is the range of services and technology we’re able to provide under one roof. An idea can come to us as something as simple as a picture or sketch, and our team can take it through CAD design, wax prototyping, manufacturing, and ultimately the finished piece. At the same time, we’ve been investing more in the digital side of jewelry. Our AI Jewelry Designer and Virtual Showroom are a couple examples of that, and we have some new technology and experiences in the works that we’re really excited about.

As much as the business has evolved, we’ve kept the personalized, appointment-only approach we’ve had from the beginning. We work with people creating something one-of-a-kind for themselves as well as businesses developing products and building jewelry lines. We like to think of J&M as more than a place to purchase jewelry, we’re a resource for creating it.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
For J&M, taking risks has usually meant being willing to try something new and see where it takes us. As the business has grown, we’ve invested in new services, manufacturing capabilities, and technology, sometimes before knowing exactly how our clients would respond.

Our AI Jewelry Designer and Virtual Showroom are good examples. Developing tools like these requires a lot of time and resources, and there’s always some uncertainty when introducing something that isn’t traditionally part of the jewelry-buying experience. We’re continuing to explore that side of the business and have several new ideas and technologies in development.

We don’t necessarily look at risk as making one huge decision. For us, it’s been more about being willing to experiment, learn what works, and keep moving forward. Some ideas work better than others, but being open to trying them has played a big part in how J&M has evolved.
