Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Sailor.
Hi Jocelyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I had an idea while home during the pandemic lockdown of 2020 and developed a resource for social workers. My business is School Social Work Solutions. My thought process behind beginning my business was to uplift, empower, educate and inspire other school social workers to position themselves to be mental health experts in their schools. School social workers are the unsung heroes in education, yet are at the forefront of the school mental health crisis even more now as we live through the pandemic. When I first entered school social work there was no playbook or resource that explained what the role of the school social worker from a systems perspective, assisted in setting professional boundaries and modeled ways to practice self-care to combat burnout. My premier product, The School Social Work Solutions Academic Resource Planner, does just that. Not only is it a 12-month undated planner with monthly and weekly spreads, monthly self-care wellness assessments and journal prompt but it also has ICD Codes, psychotropic medications, tips to run successful groups, monthly affirmations, social justice resources, definitions and examples of the role of the school social worker and much more. The School Social Work Solutions Instagram page is the platform where mental health, wellness and education intersect. I share knowledge, tips and resources that allow school social workers to sharpen their expertise and be of even more value to their school community through my content.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been quite the ride so far. My business is now 2 years old and there have been some hurdles along the way. The first was researching and investing in myself to learn how to develop a quality planner from designers to printers to developing and shipping. Then I had to learn to market and draw my ideal audience to my platform. Also formulating a business, paying taxes all those not so fun administrative things that no one really talks about when starting a business. I still have more to learn and more milestones to hit as far as the back end of the backend of my business but I am enjoying the journey for sure.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
There are 3 podcasts that I recommend that keep me motivated. The latter two I was also interviewed for one of their episodes.
1. The Girl CEO Podcast – Ronne Brown
2. The Social Work Insider Podcast – Harleny Vasquez
3. Social Workers Rise Podcast – Catherine Moore, LCSW
I love the Mattie James blog (www.mattiejames.com) because she gives so many everyday tips to be an efficient woman in general. I also love following @myliek on instagram because she drops so many gems about self-worth, self-confidence, therapy, self-reflection and entrepreneurship.
