Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Scarani
Hi MELISSA, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always harbored a deep passion for rocks, gems, and minerals. From a young age, I loved collecting rocks, and as I grew up, I came to know and love the impressive collection at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. After graduating from high school, I pursued my interest further by enrolling in the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and achieving the title of Graduate Gemologist at the age of 18.
For the next 25 years, I dedicated myself to a career in retail, where I had the privilege of working in upscale stores selling renowned brands, and unique antique jewelry and managing jewelry shops. In 2017, I started my second gemological education with Gem-A (Gemmological Association of Great Britain. I completed and earned my FGA designation in 2019. While still immersed in the retail industry, I began laying the foundation for my own appraisal business. During this time, I met a gemologist from Rome, and we decided to marry and open an office together in Houston housing both Gemology Resources and Magilabs USA.
Today, our joint office serves as an independent jewelry appraiser, equipped with one of the most advanced gemological laboratories in the South West.
I am committed to continuous learning and actively participate in various seminars, conferences, and trade shows throughout the year. In a world that is constantly evolving, I believe in the importance of networking and sharing knowledge with fellow professionals.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Achievement and life are never easy, but by maintaining a forward-looking mindset, one can overcome any obstacles that come their way. It is essential to never remain stagnant. A quote by Martin Luther King, Jr. perfectly encapsulates this sentiment: “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” This serves as a reminder that progress is achieved through perseverance and determination.

I am a graduate gemologist with credentials from the American Society of Appraisers (ASA), enabling me to conduct qualified IRS appraisals, litigation appraisals, and other complex assignments.
