Exploring Life & Business with Oceania Johnson of The Blood Fairy Mobile Phlebotomy LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oceania Johnson

Hi Oceania, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in foster care, moving through various homes across Texas from the age of 7 until I aged out of the system at 18. At 11, I almost got adopted while living in North Carolina. One of my proudest achievements was becoming the first in my family to graduate high school, a significant milestone for me. In 2015, I earned my CNA certification and worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for about five years.

In 2021, motivated by the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided to get my phlebotomy certification. I’ve been working as a phlebotomist since then, and about five months ago, I started my own mobile phlebotomy business, The Blood Fairy Mobile Phlebotomy LLC. We offer hassle-free blood draws right at home, along with a range of tests, including DNA testing, early gender reveal, and immigration testing. It’s been an incredible journey, driven by my passion to make healthcare more accessible and comfortable for everyone.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting a business, especially one in healthcare, comes with its challenges. One of the biggest struggles has been funding. I started The Blood Fairy Mobile Phlebotomy LLC using personal funds, and managing finances to keep everything running smoothly has been tough.

Another significant challenge I’ve recently faced is the loss of my father. He was always so proud of me and played a key role in inspiring me to persevere in my business. After his passing, I noticed I had been pulling away from the business, as his absence made it harder to stay motivated without his constant encouragement. However, I had to remind myself that his presence is still with me spiritually, and that thought has helped me regain my focus and continue moving forward with the same passion and dedication he always believed in.

The final challenge was navigating the complexities of the foster care system growing up, which made it difficult to find stability. Moving from home to home taught me resilience, but it also meant I had to work extra hard to build a life for myself once I aged out.

Despite these struggles, each obstacle has pushed me to become stronger and more determined. I’ve learned to adapt quickly, find creative solutions, and keep moving forward, no matter how tough the journey gets.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Blood Fairy Mobile Phlebotomy LLC?

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has played an interesting role in both my life and business. On one hand, I’ve faced what some might call “bad luck,” like growing up in the foster care system and navigating the instability that came with it. Those experiences were tough, but they also shaped me into a resilient and resourceful person. I’ve learned to turn challenges into opportunities, which has been crucial in building my business.

On the flip side, I’ve had moments of “good luck” too. Meeting the right people at the right time, like Khalil Thomas, who encouraged me to start my business, has been incredibly fortunate. The timing of getting my phlebotomy certification during the COVID-19 pandemic also turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it opened up new opportunities for me to serve the community in a meaningful way.

Overall, while luck has played a role, I believe it’s been my determination and willingness to adapt that have truly driven my success.
