Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Tovar.
Hi Patricia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Patricia, and I’m the artist and owner of The Honey Brush, a live illustration business based in the The Woodlands area.
Art has always been a way for me to express myself, but I never imagined it would turn into the business it is today. A big part of what pushed me to pursue my dreams was my mom’s terminal cancer diagnosis. Facing the reality of her illness lit a fire in me to stop putting my dreams on hold and start pursuing the career I truly wanted. It reminded me how precious life is and how important it is to make the most of the time we have. I also love, love! I’m a huge rom-com lover, and I would love to spend every weekend at a wedding, witnessing two people deeply in love.
The Honey Brush grew form my love of painting and my desire to create something meaningful for people. I wanted to offer something different from the traditional wedding favors, something personal that guests can take home and frame after the celebration was over.
The idea of live guest illustrations really spoke to me because it combines art, connection, and memories. I get to paint guest as they celebrate one of the happiest days in someone’s life, and I love knowing that each illustration becomes a little keepsake from that moment.
Building this business have been a journey of learning, taking chances, and believing in myself. As a mother of three, I’ve also learned how to balance being a mom with pursuing something that I’m passionate about.
Today, The Honey Brush is about more than just painting portraits. I create custom watercolor home portraits, pet portraits, banners, and other personalized artwork. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As someone who is brand new to the wedding industry, I had so much to learn. It has been a huge learning opportunity for me. However, I’ve been fortunate to connect with so many supportive vendors. Their encouragement has made this journey even more exciting!
One of the biggest challenges has been navigating inquiries for the same date. It’s definitely a good problem to have, but it can be difficult having to turn couples away, especially during popular wedding months. October was a perfect example, as my calendar was completely booked six months in advance!
It’s been a learning experience figuring out how to manage my availability while making sure I can give each couple the best experience possible. I’m incredibly grateful for the interest in The Honey Brush, and I’m excited to continue growing and connecting with more couples and vendors along the way.
I currently have limited availability for April and October 2027, so couples interested in booking live illustrations for their wedding are encouraged to reach out early!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Honey Brush specializes in live watercolor guest illustrations for weddings and special events, offering couples and hosts a unique, personalized alternative to traditional wedding favors. Based in the Houston area, I hand-paint guest portraits during celebrations, giving guests one-of-a-kind keepsakes they can take home and treasure for years to come.
What sets The Honey Brush apart is the experience behind the art. You’re not working with a large corporation; you’re supporting a small, one-woman art business. As a small business owner and mother of three, I pour my heart into my work. I understand how meaningful it is to preserve memories and celebrate the people who make life’s biggest moments special. I want every guest to feel special, seen, and appreciated. Watching guests get excited as they see their portraits come to life is one of my favorite parts of what I do.
Beyond the live guest illustration experience, I also offer personalized artwork, including wedding venue signage, event banners, animal portraits, and commissioned pieces.
The Honey Brush serves couples throughout Houston, Dallas, and beyond, and I love bringing this unique blend of entertainment and artistry to celebrations of all sizes.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest advice is to be patient with yourself and trust the process. Starting something new can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to figure everything out as you go, but you don’t have to have all the answers right away. Give yourself permission to learn, make mistakes, and grow along the way.
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, connect with others in your industry, and ask questions. You never know what opportunities can come from building genuine relationships and supporting others. Most importantly, don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. Everyone’s journey looks different, and success takes time.
I wish I had known that you don’t need to feel completely ready to get started. Sometimes, you just have to take that first step, believe in yourself, and figure things out along the way. Start before you’re ready, stay true to yourself, and remember why you began in the first place.
