Today we’d like to introduce you to Shantel Brown.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was a junior in high school, I originally planned to become a veterinarian because I’ve always loved animals. But after realizing I couldn’t handle some of the more difficult parts of the job, I started exploring other career paths. Around that time, while playing The Sims, I stumbled across a beautifully designed home another player had created. I was fascinated by the creativity, and it was the first time I realized I could turn my passion for design into a career. Soon after, I helped my grandmother remodel her home, and seeing that transformation confirmed that this was the path I wanted to pursue.
That passion led me to earn a degree in interior design and eventually launch Olive & Form. Along the way, I’ve worked in interior design, event planning, business management, and client experience. Those experiences shaped the way I approach both design and relationships. Today, I’m pursuing my MBA in Project Management and Process Improvement at the University of Houston-Downtown while growing Olive & Form and sharing my journey as a content creator. I’m excited to continue building a business that creates beautiful, functional spaces while encouraging others to embrace their own journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t change the journey because every challenge has helped me grow.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to embrace my own timeline. It’s easy to compare yourself to others and feel like you’re behind, especially when you’re building a business while pursuing graduate school. I’ve had to remind myself that success doesn’t have to happen all at once and that building something thoughtfully is better than rushing just to keep up.
Starting Olive & Form has also pushed me outside of my comfort zone. Designing spaces comes naturally to me, but running a business means learning branding, marketing, networking, and having the confidence to put yourself out there. Those skills don’t develop overnight, and I’ve learned to view every opportunity as a chance to grow.
Looking back, I’ve realized that progress isn’t always measured by big milestones. Sometimes it’s found in consistently showing up, continuing to learn, and trusting that each step is preparing you for what’s next.
As you know, we’re big fans of Olive & Form. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Olive & Form is rooted in the belief that home is more than a place—it’s where life unfolds. I specialize in creating calm, elevated, and timeless interiors that reflect the people who live in them. Whether it’s a single-room refresh or a larger design project, my goal is to create spaces that feel beautiful, functional, and deeply personal.
What sets Olive & Form apart is the experience I create for my clients. Great design begins with listening. Every project starts with understanding my clients’ lifestyles, routines, and vision before making a single design decision. I want every client to feel heard, supported, and confident throughout the design process, knowing their home is being designed around the way they live.
I’m most proud that Olive & Form is being built with care. Rather than chasing rapid growth, I’m focused on building meaningful relationships, delivering a personalized experience, and creating homes that stand the test of time. My hope is that every client walks into their home and immediately feels a sense of calm, comfort, and belonging.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has certainly played a role in my journey, but I’ve learned that many opportunities come from showing up consistently and being prepared when they do.
I’ve been fortunate to meet incredible mentors, build meaningful relationships, and connect with people who have encouraged my growth. Many of those opportunities started with simply saying yes—attending an event, introducing myself, or stepping into a leadership role. Each experience has opened new doors and reminded me of the value of staying curious and continuing to learn.
Looking back, some of what felt like setbacks at the time ended up leading me in the right direction. Those moments encouraged me to grow in ways I hadn’t expected and ultimately gave me the confidence to build Olive & Form while continuing my education.
I’m grateful for every opportunity that’s come my way, but I also believe in doing the work behind the scenes. Building relationships, staying open to learning, and continuing to show up have been just as important as good timing.
