Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Ali.
Sophia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As I got close to graduating residency, I realized I didn’t want to work 8 to 5 seeing 20-plus patients for 10 or 15 minutes each, then going home to finish all the notes, labs, prescriptions, and research I couldn’t fit in between visits. I wanted to practice medicine on my own terms, not the way insurance companies and large institutions wanted me to practice. I wanted control over my schedule so I could give every patient the time they deserve to talk about their health.
So after residency I worked as a locum tenens physician, picking up shifts around Houston, mostly at Legacy clinics, which gave me time to think about my next steps. Legacy takes care of patients who might not get care otherwise, either because they can’t afford it or because they need specialized services like HIV or gender care, and I loved contributing to that mission.
I’m also a creative person, and I started itching for more ways to bring art into my life. What I found is that I didn’t have to choose between the two. I see art in aesthetic medicine every day. Even procedures that seem routine, like Botox, are an art form to me, because using anatomy to make small adjustments are what get you the result you’re hoping for. And as someone who has navigated her own share of skin concerns, combining aesthetics with preventive medicine felt completely natural. My husband, Eric, believed in it as much as I did, and together we started envisioning what would become Skin Talk.
Deciding we wanted to open Skin Talk was one thing but figuring out how to start and operate a business was another. So we researched. We talked to successful business owners both in the industry and outside of it, dug into market research, and read books and listened to podcasts nonstop. We trained relentlessly. We learned about interior design and how to design a clinic, and how to manage a construction project. We built an amazing team that we’ve been very lucky to find. We made Skin Talk come to life.
We’re still learning and growing, and we continue to change and adapt, especially as we hear about the needs of our community. But we’ve worked so hard to be where we are today, and we’re so appreciative that patients are walking through our doors and trusting us with their care.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t know if I would say it has been a smooth road. Thankfully we haven’t encountered anything we couldn’t handle and figure out. I would describe it more as a winding, uphill road, like the drive from Vancouver to Whistler, which is not actually a very long road at all. But it is winding, and a climb. It’s insanely beautiful, but scary at times, where you feel that you could easily just fall over the ledge.
And we met our fair share of ledges. Like when we had to rescind an offer letter so early in our journey for the health of our company, or when our general contractor needed more money to finish our project, so we had to pay more than we anticipated to complete our build-out, which led us to redo our finances. Or when we worked twelve hours a day, seven days a week to bring Skin Talk to life and almost burned ourselves out. Or the fact that we’re challenging ourselves every day and trying something new every day, so much so that we’re constantly in a state of healthy stress. I hope.
It’s like being on a beautiful road trip with your best friend, enjoying the ride but having to keep each other alert and motivated to reach the destination. A trip where when you finally reach your destination, you haven’t seen anything more beautiful in your life.
That’s where the analogy ends. Because although Skin Talk is one of the most beautiful things we have created, we still have a long road ahead of us, a road of dreams and aspirations, of hard work and dedication, of relationships and adventures, to see what Skin Talk can achieve.
We’ve been impressed with Skin Talk, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Skin Talk is a doctor-led aesthetics clinic in Richmond, Texas. I’m a dual board-certified family and obesity medicine physician, and I’m also a menopause society certified practitioner. Every plan starts with a conversation about your skin, your history, and how we can reach your skin and health goals.
We’re known for laser and energy-based treatments like Moxi and BBL HEROic, microneedling, medical-grade facials and peels, injectables, and our own skincare line. A skincare line which we’ve received so much good feedback about, that we’re currently working on selling it online on our website so we can bring it to the mainstream market.
What sets us apart is the education. We treat all skin types, including deeper skin tones that are too often left out of the conversation, and we take the time to explain every recommendation.
We’re most proud that people leave Skin Talk feeling informed, empowered, and genuinely happy with their results.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
When my husband and I started seriously considering creating Skin Talk, we knew it had to be all or nothing. We put everything on the line to pursue our dream, and we realized this was our one and only shot at it. Life is too short to play it safe forever, and we were lucky enough to have many people in our lives who supported us and enabled us to build the business we wanted to build. We’re taking a risk for what we feel is the right thing to do, to give our patients the time they deserve, to treat patients with deeper skin tones effectively and safely, and to help our community have access to evidence-based medical aesthetics and wellness.
