Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Jucker.
Hi Bobby , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My babysitter was the bakery. I was always in school or the bakery. Then starting as a teen I began learning all the basic aspects of the profession – how to make breads, pastries, cakes and decorating, as well as all the logistics acquired to run a family bakery. I then went to college and received a degree in petroleum land management at the height of the oil bust. So I temporarily came to work at Three Brothers Bakery and that was almost 45 years ago – a long run for a temp job! Add to the mix a wildly creative mind —combined with a love of developing large-scale and unique confectioneries with mechanical and extreme elements, and you now have someone with a vision of unexplored possibilities of design. I have created some extreme cakes ranging from an oil derrick that was 8.5 feet tall and shot 3.5 feet of real fire and chocolate “oil,” to a wild turkey (as in fowl) and a fire breathing dragon made for The Food Network! Additionally, I created the now famous Pumpecapple Piecake and Three Brothers Bakery’s pecan pie which was named Best Mail Order Pecan Pie America Has to Offer by Country Living Magazine and our award-winning key lime pie which took home the blue ribbon in it’s category at the 2017 National Pie Championship for Best Key Lime Pie.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
At Three Brothers Bakery we have been through 4 floods, a fire, 2 hurricanes, pandemic, freeze and derecho. Many people ask us how we keep going when Three Brothers Bakery has been faced with such adversity. The bakery was founded by my father and two uncles who were Holocaust survivors. What we have faced is an inconvenience. What they faced was a tragedy, but they survived and built a wonderful legacy for us to carry on. So when asked where do you get your resilience from – the answer is “We stand on the strong shoulders of survivors.”
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Three Brothers Bakery?
Three Brothers Bakery is a fifth-generation, family-owned bakery founded by Holocaust survivors – Sigmund, Sol & Max Jucker. The bakery brings over 200 years of Eastern European scratch-baking traditions to Houston, Texas. The family’s recipes, which originated in Chrzanow, Poland circa 1825, were preserved through the Holocaust and brought to the U.S. following liberation.
Today, our “memory makers who happen to be bakers®” offer a full line of breads, pastries, cookies, specialty dessert cakes, and pies. Three Brothers Bakery is a seven-time winner of the Houston Chronicle’s Chron.com “Best of the Best Bakery” (2020-2026) and best dessert multiple times, and as I mentioned the pecan pie has been named “the Best Mail Order Pecan Pie America Has to Offer” by Country Living magazine multiple times.
The three brothers knew what it was like to be hungry, so day old baked goods are given to the hungry and homeless daily. Additionally, we support multiple causes with our “Cookies for a Cause” which we offer 9 months of the year. 50% of proceeds of the cookie will go to a different charity each month. We have been a strong supporter of Susan G. Komen Houston, Holocaust Museum Houston, Texas Children’s Hospital and many more.
After going through so many disasters my wife, Janice, is now a dedicated advocate for small business disaster recovery, In 2018, we received the SBA Phoenix Award for small business disaster recovery.
She sits on the board of the Greater Houston Restaurant Association, the state Leadership Council of NFIB (National Federation of Indepdent Businesses) and the national Vice Chair of the Goldman Sachs 10000 Small Businesses Voices organization. In addition to various bakery groups, I enjoy the South Texas Herb Society gatherings.
Three Brothers Bakery operates four locations in the Houston area: 4036 S. Braeswood Blvd, 12393 Kingsride Lane, 4606 Washington Ave., and 574 Chimney Rock Rd.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My idea of happiness is a day out on a boat fishing. The calm and quiet and communing with nature have always appealed to me. Additionally, I love working in my garden. But my favorite love that gives me great happiness is my family. I have two wonderful sons, two wonderful daughter-in-laws and 3 absolutely adorable, loving grandchildren. This new aspect of my life brings me the greatest joy. Grandkids are great – you shake them up, rile them up, sugar them up and then give them back to their parents. How fun is that?
