Hi Fioraé, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After planning one of our honeymoons during the Pandemic and using a travel advisor, we realized this industry was seeing a fresh revival, contrary to popular belief, and we had the idea to start our business. We worked on our business nights and weekends while also maintaining our corporate careers in technology PR. After about a year and a half, we quit our corporate careers and our travel business became our full-time hustle. We have learned so much along the way and after our first full year doing travel full-time, we made our host agency’s top producer program, called Pinnacle Circle. We’d like to think that we got here because we are doing exactly what we are meant to be doing – helping people see the world. It sounds cheesy, but we love what we do so it truly doesn’t feel like ‘work’. Travel is our way of life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It certainly has not been a smooth road. In fact, most people probably would have quit before getting to the point where we are now (~3 and half years in). There have been many struggles. For one, we did not pay ourselves from our travel business account until ~2 years after starting our business. Meaning that we did not see compensation for our labor working in travel for about 2 years until we knew we had steady progress and a real business model. We don’t regret a single thing, but this was hard. Working two essentially full-time jobs at the same time and only being paid for one of them was quite the hustle. But, it was worth it.
We also struggled early on with a forced name and brand change thanks to a trademark dispute. This absolutely crushed us at first, but it actually ended up being the best thing that could have happened to our business. It forced us to pause, reset and hire a professional brand and web designer to do everything new for us from scratch. Looking back, we are happy this happened but when we were in the thick of it, it felt like the end of the world. We feel our new brand resonates much better with people now, so we choose to see it as a blessing in disguise.
