Hidden Gems: Meet Marsha Guillory, PhD of Guillory Candle Co., LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marsha Guillory, PhD.

Marsha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Guillory Candle Co. during my years as a remote worker. Candles were my little ritual, a way to make ordinary moments feel calmer and more grounded. But after buying countless big‑box candles, I realized many of them were filled with pollutants, synthetic additives, and chemicals that didn’t belong in the air I breathed every day.
I began researching cleaner alternatives, studying natural waxes, plant‑based ingredients, and the science behind fragrance. What started as curiosity quickly became a craft. I taught myself how to make candles that were not only beautiful, but safe, intentional, and rooted in quality. Batch after batch — failed formulas, refinements, long nights — I built something from scratch that felt meaningful.
Guillory Candle Co. was born from that personal need: a desire for luxury without compromise, for products that elevate your space without harming it. What began as a simple solution for me grew into a brand that now helps others create the same sense of calm, comfort, and intentional living in their own homes.
Today, my work is still guided by that same philosophy — thoughtful ingredients, elevated design, and a commitment to crafting candles that feel like a breath of fresh air in every room.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve dealt with partners stepping away, the constant challenge of financial stability, and the trial‑and‑error of figuring out which markets truly align with my brand. Building recognition in a saturated industry has required patience, consistency, and a willingness to learn. Navigating social media — showing up authentically, finding my audience, and staying visible — has been its own obstacle.
Like most business owners, I’ve faced the quieter struggles too — the ones people don’t always talk about.
There were moments of burnout from wearing every hat at once: creator, marketer, accountant, customer service, fulfillment. Times when sourcing materials became unpredictable, forcing me to pivot quickly or reformulate. Pricing products in a way that honored my time and quality, while still staying competitive, was a challenge. There were days when I questioned everything — not because I didn’t love my work, but because building something from the ground up requires a level of resilience you only understand once you’re in it. Every challenge has shaped me. Every setback has strengthened my resilience, and every small win reminds me why I started.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Guillory Candle Co. is a home‑fragrance studio built around atmosphere, craftsmanship, and the belief that scent can shift the entire energy of a room. I hand‑pour every candle using clean ingredients, natural waxes, and fragrance blends that are layered, balanced, and meant to feel lived‑in rather than loud. My work centers on creating candles that burn smoothly, smell refined and bring a sense of warmth and character into a space. People often tell me my scents feel like memories — familiar, comforting, and quietly expressive — and that’s exactly what I aim for.

What sets my brand apart is the care behind every detail. I’m not chasing trends or mass production; I’m building pieces that feel personal. From sourcing materials to designing the look and feel of each collection, I want my candles to feel like something you reach for on purpose — the finishing touch to your home, your routine, or your moment of calm. Brand‑wise, I’m most proud of the connection my customers have formed with my work. Whether it’s someone discovering a scent that becomes “their” candle or someone telling me my products make their home feel more grounded, those moments remind me why I started. For readers, I want them to know that Guillory Candle Co. offers more than fragrance — it offers atmosphere, comfort, and a little everyday magic you can light whenever you need it.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I Like Best About Houston
Houston has a way of feeling big and small at the same time. It’s a city full of movement, culture, food, and people from every background — but it also has pockets that feel like their own little worlds. I love how easy it is to find community here, especially among creatives and small business owners. People show up for each other. They share resources, they collaborate, they root for you. There’s a warmth to Houston that isn’t just about the weather — it’s the people, the neighborhoods, the energy. And the diversity of the city means inspiration is everywhere: in the food, the art, the music, the markets, the conversations. It’s a place where you can build something from scratch and genuinely feel supported.

What I Like Least About Houston
If I’m honest, the hardest part is the heat — not just summer heat, but the kind of humidity that makes even October feel like July. It affects everything, especially for small business owners who participate in markets or pop‑ups. Outdoor events can be tough, and the weather doesn’t always cooperate with the plans you make. Houston also moves fast, which can be overwhelming at times. There’s so much happening that it can feel like you’re constantly trying to keep up or stand out in a very crowded space. But even with those challenges, it’s still home — and the good outweighs the frustrating.
