Hidden Gems: Meet Rebecca Bush of Lead Changes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Bush.

Hi Rebecca, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a Certified Academic Language Therapist and the founder of Lead Changes, a private practice based right here in Houston. I was born and raised in this city, and after years of teaching and supporting families around the world, I’m so grateful to be back home doing work that deeply matters to me. My journey to being a dyslexia and literacy specialist was an unusual one though. I actually started my career in the music industry before a volunteer opportunity at a rural school in Honduras shifted everything. That experience showed me the life-changing power of education. Since then, I’ve worked in schools across three continents, earned two master’s degrees, and navigated the hard moments of burnout, self-doubt, and the leap from secure jobs to building something of my own. But through every pivot, my mission has stayed the same: to make sure no child, or parent, feels alone in their learning journey.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is finding balance in a field that’s so heart-driven. Working with kids and families, especially when emotions run high, is so incredibly rewarding, but also heavy. I care deeply about the people I work with, and early on I struggled to set boundaries around my time, energy, and capacity. Over the years, I’ve learned that taking care of myself isn’t selfish, it’s essential. When I’m rested, supported, and grounded, I can show up fully for the families who trust me with their journey. Walking with my dog in Memorial Park or spending quiet moments out with my horses has become the reset I need. That time in nature helps me clear my head, reconnect with why I do this work, and return to it with clarity and purpose.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Lead Changes, I support students with dyslexia and other reading challenges, and just as importantly, I coach the families walking that path beside them. After nearly 20 years in education, I saw how many parents were left to figure things out on their own after a diagnosis. I saw them feeling confused or overwhelmed, and often filled with self-blame. So, I created the kind of support I wish existed: clear, compassionate, and rooted in what actually works. This is also why I wrote my upcoming book Dyslexia and Your Newly Diagnosed Child, a practical, empowering guide for families navigating the early stages of a diagnosis. My work blends structured literacy intervention, parent coaching, and school consulting. I also draw from my years offering equine-assisted services, which taught me how much trust, emotional regulation, and nonverbal connection matter, especially for kids who learn differently. At the heart of it all, I believe that with the right tools and support, every child can thrive, and every parent can feel confident guiding them.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I love being in Houston, it’s a city full of incredible educators, therapists, and thought leaders in the fields of literacy and learning differences. When I started my practice in Hong Kong, I was the only one there trained to the level I am now, and it felt isolating at times. Being back in Houston is such a gift. I’m constantly learning from brilliant colleagues, including the team at the Neuhaus Education Center, the board of the Houston Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, and the co-founders of A New Leaf School in the Heights. Their dedication to kids, families, and the science of how we learn continues to inspire me.
