Today we’d like to introduce you to Vernell Moore Jr..
Hi Vernell, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Honestly? If you told me a couple of years ago that Risk is Key would be what it is today, I would’ve laughed. It didn’t start with a refined business plan; instead, it started as a school project I was honestly just trying to get through. I was assigned to study an entrepreneur I admired, so I went with Ralph Lauren. I started reading all about his life, and I got super inspired. He built a huge, famous company from just an idea in his head. It made me think, “Wow, if he can create a whole world with his clothing, why can’t I?” That homework didn’t stay homework for long because it turned into an obsession.
But I didn’t just wake up the next day and print tees. I spent months going down a rabbit hole on the streetwear scenes local, US based and abroad by watching the drops, reading the comments, and seeing the way communities were forming. And the more I looked, the more I realized how much was missing. Everything looked “cool,” but it felt empty.
There wasn’t a brand that felt like us. There wasn’t a space that was actually fun, uplifting, and actually affordable, while still pushing you to actually bet on yourself.
I kept looking for a label that spoke to that voice in my head: the one that whispers, “Take the risk. Be bold. Trust the process.” When I realized nobody else was saying it, I knew I had to be the one to shout it.
That’s where the name came from. I needed something that felt like a heartbeat. I didn’t want a name that just sounded “aesthetic” or trendy; I wanted something that felt like a key turning in a lock. I wanted a name that stayed with you… something hopeful, memorable, and deeply meaningful for anyone looking for substance in a world of fast fashion. It had to tell a story before you even saw the clothes.
Risk is Key became so much more than just “selling clothes.” It became about that shot of confidence you get when you put an outfit on and suddenly carry yourself differently. I wanted to capture that “leap of faith” energy for the college kids, the creators, and the athletes… the ones who are tired of waiting for a “perfect time” that never comes.
It was a mix of intense research, a lot of self-reflection, and that initial spark Ralph Lauren gave me. I’m a firm believer that the life you actually want is always sitting right there, just on the other side of a risk worth taking. I just wanted to build a brand that reminds you of that every single morning when you get dressed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Actually, the road hasn’t just been bumpy; it’s been a total test of patience.
When you start a brand, everyone expects this explosive, viral moment where everything just “clicks” overnight. But for me, it’s been a slow burn. There were so many days where it felt like I was shouting into a void, wondering if anyone was actually feeling the vision. I had to learn the hard way that building something with real substance takes time you can’t shortcut. I had to learn to sit with the quiet moments and just… trust my instincts.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve gathered is the power of seeking wisdom from the legends who came before me. I’ve spent a lot of time looking at established brands, not to copy them, but to understand the “why” behind their longevity. There is so much “secret sauce” in the way older brands handle their community and their quality, and I wanted to soak up as much of that experience as possible.
However, that came with a tricky secondary lesson: not all help is good help.
When you’re an entrepreneur, people will come at you from every angle with “advice” or offers to collaborate. In the beginning, it’s tempting to say yes to everyone because you’re hungry for growth. But I realized quickly that if a partnership or a piece of advice doesn’t align with the soul of Risk is Key, it’s actually a distraction. I’ve had to turn down opportunities that looked great on paper but felt wrong in my gut.
Staying true to the vision meant being okay with moving a little slower if it meant moving in the right direction. It’s about being picky with who you let into your inner circle. If they don’t value the “risk” or the community the way we do, they don’t have a seat at the table. It’s been a journey of learning when to listen to the experts and when to shut out the noise and just listen to myself.
That patience is what makes the wins feel so much better now. We aren’t just building a trend; we’re building a foundation.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Risk is Key Clothing?
Honestly, Risk is Key is a love letter to anyone who has ever felt like they were waiting for “permission” to chase a dream.
What We Do & What We’re Known For
We are a clothing and lifestyle brand, but if you ask our community, they’ll tell you we specialize in confidence. We’re known for that specific streetwear aesthetic that feels high-end but stays accessible. Whether it’s our signature hoodies or our “Risktakers” podcast, everything we do is designed to be a physical reminder to trust your gut. We’ve even got our mascots beagles, Rik and RiRi—who keep the energy fun and remind us not to take ourselves too seriously.
What Sets Us Apart
What truly sets us apart is that we aren’t just selling an “aesthetic” or a logo: we’re offering a mindset. While a lot of brands feel exclusive or “too cool” for the average person, we’re building a space where Gen Z creators, college students, and athletes feel seen.
I’ve spent a lot of time playing “fly on the wall” in the fashion scene, and I noticed a huge gap: there wasn’t a brand that felt real. We fill that gap by being a community-based label that actually encourages you to bet on yourself. We prioritize substance over hype.
What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m most proud of the patience it took to get here. It hasn’t been a smooth road; it’s been a total slow burn. I’ve had to learn the hard way to follow my instincts and seek wisdom from more experienced brands while also having the courage to say “no” to help that didn’t match the vision. I’m proud that we didn’t take shortcuts. We stayed true to the “Risk is Key” mantra even when it was tempting to chase a quick trend.
What I Want Readers to Know
If you take one thing away from our story, let it be this: the life you want is always sitting right there, just on the other side of a risk worth taking. When you wear our pieces, I want it to be that moment where you stop waiting for the “perfect time” and finally take the leap. We aren’t just making clothes to sell clothes; we’re building a space where your ambition is reflected back at you. Whether you’re browsing theriskiskey.com or joining the conversation on our socials, you’re part of a family that believes your path is worth the risk.
