Inspiring Conversations with Yarima Newlin of LUX DENTAL STUDIO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yarima Newlin.

Hi yarima, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up in Colombia, Dr. Yarima Newlin experienced firsthand the necessity of delivering compassionate dental care. She started her journey in Dentistry at the Universidad of Cartagena, Colombia, in 2003. She then transferred to the University of St. Thomas in Houston, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Biology in 2011. Dr. Newlin completed her dental training at The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston in 2015.

She has furthermore perfected her skills by taking master classes in full Mouth rehabilitation, endodontics, stress-related wear, and aesthetic composite courses in the world-renowned LonDec Institute in London. Dr. Newlin was fortunate enough to gain entrance to the prestigious post-graduate program at King’s College London, where she completed a Master of Science in Aesthetic Dentistry.

During this time, she also attended the FGDP (U.K.)’s Short Course in Periodontics at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London.

Dr. Newlin’s thirst for delivering the latest advances in modern dentistry has her on a continuous journey around the world, seeking the newest dental technologies, learning, and self-development. She is currently completing training in implant placement, her fellowship at the Academy of General Dentistry, and several other courses aimed at refining her skills in dentistry.

Outside of Dentistry, Dr. Newlin is a foodie and an avid world traveler. She loves trying new restaurants around the Houston area with her family. She devotes time to various volunteer opportunities throughout the Greater Houston area and overseas. She also donates to various clubs throughout the Houston area.

Dr. Newlin strongly believes in creating meaningful connections with her patients and providing the latest technology with a conservative approach in restorative treatments. Her love for minimally invasive dentistry is infectious, and her patients feel at ease by her down to earth, easy-going personality.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest thing was coming to USA with zero knowledge of the English language. I knew I wanted to continue my education so I enrolled to ESL classes at University of St Thomas. I focused heavily on gaining and perfecting my language skills while growing a family. I did experience racist remarks from some professors along the way. But I also experienced the love and determination from other professors that made me push myself to the limit. Being an immigrant mother without any family member in the US was extremely hard. I am forever thankful to St Thomas University and UTHSC-Houston for allowing me to bring my daughter to some classes and school. Back there, this was not the norm, but the schools were very understanding and gave me the flexibility to pursue my education.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about LUX DENTAL STUDIO?
Lux Dental Studio was born out of the idea of being closer to my family and offer flexible hours to my patients and staff. I wanted to have the freedom and flexibility to chose what procedures to do, the hours I wanted to work, and what patients to accept. I love my patients. They are part of my family. I am extremely approachable. I live in the same community I practice, so I see my patients all the time. I believe in leading with kindness. I understand the struggles and tribulations many of my patients and staff go through day-to-day. I try to be empathetic as much as possible. I enjoy making connections with my patients, I text and email with them regularly. In our practice we enjoy doing almost all aspects of Dentistry. We mostly see anxious patients. We have a reputation of being kind and patient. The current climate has made supplies and staff very difficult to find and costs have almost tripled from the past couple of years. Dentistry should not break your bank, it should be affordable. I am positive this will change soon.

What matters most to you? Why?
Creating meaningful connections with my patients and providing the best service I can give them. Dentistry is a very stressful career. We have one of the highest suicide rates in the industry. Having a person you’ve never met come to you and say they “hate the dentist” is a gut-wrenching feeling. I see it as a defense mechanism and try to find ways to empathize with my patients and make them at ease. I believe creating rapport is the most important thing a health professional needs to learn. Patient’s distrust most times arise from impersonal interactions where they do not feel heard or understood. Taking my time to learn about their lives and overall well-being is paramount to create positive connections and memories.
