We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lee’Or Meyerson. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Lee’Or, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
My children and I are settling into our new normal. My husband unexpectedly passed away in November and we had to navigate through some very difficult times. I was blessed with amazing projects to start the year off, so I was able to keep very busy. I also joined the board of IDS this past January. The friends that I have made, the support and the activities of this incredible design organization have been a life saver. A normal day starts by dragging my butt out of bed. Between menopause, my business, three children and a dog, I don’t spring out of bed in the mornings like I used to. I take our dog on a walk, do some chores, check emails and head out to check on the job site. Right now, I am only running a couple of projects at a time so that I can focus on taking care of my children and myself. Pilates keeps me sane, so I try to fit a class into my day, run some errands and then head home to work on the computer. I am trying to work on my social media presence, generate more leads for future business and reconnect with previous clients.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I fell into interior design in a pretty unique way! I graduated from college with a communications degree and moved to Los Angeles in my late twenties to be in “the industry.” I found myself working at a production company for various HGTV design shows as well as a deli and a special events company in order to make ends meet.
After getting married, having 3 children and moving back to my hometown of Houston, TX, I was constantly updating my home, as well as the homes of my friends and family members. I was creating furniture, accessories and clothing to satisfy my need for creativity. After designing several homes in my late thirties, I decided it was time to create my own company. Thus, BeylaBlue Designs was born, named after my three year old daughter who was born with blue eyes. Exactly one month later, her eyes turned green, but BeylaGreen did not quite sound right!
I founded BeylaBlue in 2011, because I realized how important it is to feel comfort and beauty in your own space. I can help you bring to life who you visualize you and your family to be, and how you want to bring it through to your home – so that when people walk through your door, they can see the essence of who you really are. I excel at understanding my client’s personal style and executing their design in a way that feels fresh, unique, warm and inviting.
As I mentioned before, life threw us a massive curveball this year. My husband of 22 years passed away, my oldest son returned from a gap year in Israel, my middle son became a freshman college and my daughter had just begun her junior year in high school. We have been working hard to heal and find joy in the quiet moments.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My father taught me about working hard and hustling, but my mother taught me the meaning of perservering through difficult times while still working hard and getting the job done. She had a disease that kept her in constant severe pain. No matter what, she always took care of me, my sister and my dad while running the family business. Her family was her everything and she was one of the most creative and talented people I knew.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could tell my younger self one kind thing, it would be that I am loved and I am enough.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends and even strangers know that my family is my everything!!! And that includes my friends and loved ones that have become my family. I have had so many people that are so surprised by how much closer I have become to my husband’s family over this past year. Family is all that I have and it’s important to hold them close and to let them know each and every day how much I love them.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am now doing what I was born to do, but for the longest time I did what I thought I was supposed to do. As the first born child of an immigrant, the expectation was to go to college and study business. I wanted to be a fashion designer or work in an artistic industry. I was accepted to the business school at the University of Texas and promptly flunked out of accounting. I had never failed a class in my life. I ended up getting a degree in communications, but had no idea what to do with that. It was not until after I had children, did I try to pursue an artistic career. It was a huge leap of faith and one that led me to design and to owning my own business and I absolutely love what I am doing.
