Bobby Benjamin shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Bobby , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes I would because I’m motivated and goal driven
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Bobby Benjamin, host of the new and trending opinion podcast 4zz. I’m also the owner of the Houston Raptors, Extra Eyes Media, Ben Down Productions, and co-owner of 4zz Fireworks.
I find all of my work exciting, especially with the podcast and production company, because they allow me to connect with people from all walks of life and dive into real-life experiences and stories. Through Ben Down Productions, we produce films, documentaries, and a wide variety of content available across all major platforms.
What makes the Houston Raptors and Extra Eyes Media special is our focus on serving youth and parents through sports, education, and collegiate recruitment opportunities. These experiences allow us to build meaningful, long-lasting relationships within our community and that’s what truly drives me.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I believe life has been my greatest teacher when it comes to work. There were times I faced tough conditions as an adult with children, and I realized that to become the kind of father and man I wanted to be, I had to make mature changes. Those experiences shaped me into the hardworking provider I am today. Being grown and broke taught me more about discipline, responsibility, and work ethic than anything else ever could. It pushed me to develop a mindset built on perseverance, productivity, and purpose — lessons I now carry into everything I do.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Although I’ve faced many challenges in life, the two that impacted me the most were losing my job due to kidney surgery and learning to parent from separate households. Through the grace of God, I made a full recovery, earned my bachelor’s degree, and have been teaching 7th grade for over 12 years. I’m also proud to own and co-own several successful businesses.
With improved communication between my kids and their mother, we’ve learned how to co-parent effectively and created a schedule that works for everyone. That experience not only brought me mental peace but also strengthened our family bond.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest misconception in youth sports is that everyone involved is truly focused on helping the kids and doing what’s best for them.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when my immediate family is home, relaxing or asleep after a long day of hanging out and making memories together. I also find peace in seeing my businesses grow and staying profitable, especially when my kids are learning about the business and understanding the effort it takes to achieve success.
