We recently had the chance to connect with Garrett Kirk and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Garrett , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’d say both. I’m naturally a wanderer—I like following curiosity wherever it leads—but I’ve also learned the value of staying organized so the wandering actually goes somewhere meaningful.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Garrett Kirk — a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and outdoorsman. Most people first got to know me for my guitar playing, but about three years ago, when I quit drinking, I decided it was time to step out of my comfort zone and start singing. I already had songs written, but I’d never had the courage to use my own voice. Around that same time, I started learning how to record my own projects, which opened the door to working with other artists — including The Cornbread Boyz.
As I started collaborating more, I realized I was suddenly working alongside some pretty big names, and that meant a lot to me because not long before that, I was just trying to get my life back on track. The momentum kept building — I was writing new songs, putting out albums — and before long, Riggin Skogberg and I released The Low Country Rebel album, which is finally getting the attention I always believed it deserved.
Recently, I’ve also been writing music for The Bait Boys Podcast — what started as helping with the intro to their podcast turned into me creating their full theme song, and they loved it. It’s a hilarious and creative show about bait-making… mostly. I’m excited for everyone to hear it when it drops.
After everything I’ve been through, I’m just grateful to be clear-headed, making music, and building something real again.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My dad is the first person who comes to mind when I hear the word work. He’s retired now, but he still works harder than most people I know. Even when he’s out hunting, he’s doing land management, processing his own deer — he just doesn’t know how to sit still.
When I was a kid, I used to go to work with him mowing yards for the lawn business he owned. He never took shortcuts, and it showed in everything he did. I’ll never forget the day I fell off the tailgate of his pickup while we were pruning trees. I instinctively reached out to catch myself and grabbed a fence — turned out it was razor wire. We ended up in the ER, and even though I was hurting, I remember feeling pretty cool about getting hurt at work at such a young age.
Looking back, I think that’s where I learned what real work ethic looks like — you show up, do the job right, and take pride in it, no matter what. I just wish I had started putting that into practice earlier in my own life.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self to stay true to what you want to do, and not let negativity or bad experiences shake you. If you keep your spirits up, you never know who you might inspire or impact along the way.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Most of the time, yes. The public version is me, but like anyone, sometimes I filter a little.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Absolutely. There have been times I got what I thought I wanted — whether it was recognition, success, or finishing a project — and it didn’t feel as satisfying as I expected. I’ve learned that the real reward comes from the work itself and the road getting there, not just the outcome.
