Josh Scott CSCS shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Josh, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m always proud of the relationships that are built and maintained with clients over the years. I have had some adult clients for close to 10 years and most people don’t realize how that relationship becomes more than just a training session a few times a week. You get to know their families, celebrate their successes in life, and help navigate their hardships. It’s also great to connect with a youth athlete and help them develop and gain success throughout their high school career. Whether they make it to the next level or not, I’m very proud to be a part of their development and hopefully they will continue pursuing a healthy lifestyle as they mature. As for the professional athletes I train, it’s very satisfying watching them play on tv and see them reap the benefits of all their hard work at the highest possible level. I don’t think people can see how rewarding it is to build a business that revolves around helping others.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a personal trainer & strength coach residing just north of Houston in The Woodlands, Texas. My company, JRS Performance, specializes in fitness and sports performance training of all ages, sports, and skill levels. JRS Performance is the leader in training for athletes to become faster, stronger, and more explosive, all while mitigating the risk of injury. My programs for athletes include progressive training programs which consists of sprint training, plyometrics, mobility, and both max and dynamic strength training to enhance in game performance. I currently train clients at Woodlands Sportsplex, Core Fitness, and The Club at Carlton Woods all located on the north side of Houston. I will also offer a training location in downtown Houston which will be announced soon. I have group, private, and semi-private sessions available for youth, high school, collegiate, and professional athletes. I also specialize in general fitness for adult clients interested in losing body fat, gaining strength and muscle, or improving their flexibility, mobility, and overall health. For clients that aren’t local, I offer virtual sessions and online programs. I am proud to say my brand has an excellent reputation based on results-driven training and professionalism in The Woodlands for many years. I have compiled over 15 years of training experience with a wide range of clients. Whether you’re in the NFl or just wanting to jumpstart your own personal fitness journey, I have an effective program for you.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I would have to go with my late father. He was always very supportive of me as an athlete in my youth. I was very passionate about basketball and dedicated a lot of time to it. He took notice of me spending countless hours in the driveway, at neighborhood courts, and at the local YMCA perfecting my craft and playing. He always used to tell me that whatever I chose to do for a career as an adult, I should definitely start my own business. I think he saw that I was a bit of a perfectionist and that I liked to operate with grit, passion, and an “eat what you kill” mentality. I’m blessed to have had him put that bug in my ear at a young age.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering is almost unavoidable in life and something you need to embrace if you want to be in the fitness industry. If you’re just starting out as a trainer, you’d better be ready for years of early mornings and long nights, working on the weekends, missing time with friends and loved ones, an unpredictable schedule, the feeling of being burnt out and exhausted, and an income that can fluctuate every month. These were the days that made me appreciate what I have now: a solid clientele (some have been training with me for over 10 years), a great reputation in the community and online, an income that I feel more than comfortable with, and the freedom and flexibility to work for myself. The suffering it took to grow gave me resilience in a very tough and watered down industry. It taught me that as long as you put in the time, work, and intensity into preparation, you have a great shot to end up on top.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The fitness and training industry is watered down with many “one size fits all” programs and online trainers selling the idea that you can take shortcuts by using their system or product. The truth is there are no shortcuts or special exercises and there isn’t a magic meal plan or supplement you can take today to see results tomorrow. Effective training requires long term discipline and consistency. The best results are achieved by doing basic movements and methods and progressing them intently and gradually over a long period of time, not by taking a special fat loss pill or doing a “30 day fat loss challenge”. Sometimes this idea doesn’t get a ton of “likes” on Instagram or TicTok but it’s the truth.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I would like to think they would miss our weekly training sessions together. Training is all about building, maintaining, and developing relationships. There is a lot of trust involved, especially when working with youth and professional level clients. With a lot of my athletes/clients being with me for very extended periods of time, I would hope they would miss the reliability, sincerity, and accountability that comes with my brand.
