We’re looking forward to introducing you to Katrina Lewis. Check out our conversation below.
Katrina, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
The behind the scenes relationships we build. Behind posting online about accolades and finished products, the real work is getting your face out there and networking.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Those who know me closely call me K5, K, or Trina. Strangers call me Katrina. I am the producer/director, and camera lady, of Beats Rhymes & Poetry. Been building the brand of Beats Rhymes & Poetry for almost 5 years now. It focuses on interviewing artists in creative spaces. We make it fun & inviting. We have a fan favorite segment called, ‘Way With Words’, that when DJ Sharp gives a random word, and drops a beat; Natoya Danielle and the guest go back and forth with a freestyle. The hilarities on set provide a great experience for everyone. Other than the impromptu games we get the guest to get involved with, we really give them a platform to be themselves and let everyone get to know them outside of social media. Although we are Houston based, we have managed to get our reach outside of Texas and it’s definitely a good feeling.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I grew up playing sports, and winning. Those years taught me how to lead and play within a team. As much as I loved winning, those losses felt like the whole world crumbled beneath my feet. With that, I learned how to learn from a loss and how to support my team and mange expectations.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I used to be so afraid of being a failure. I’ve hit rock bottom before and I’m still here. So in actuality, I really didn’t fail, I just found something else to peak my interest. At least that’s how I’m viewing it. Ha ha
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Standing on what you say you’re going to do. I’ve learned how to better communicate with people throughout the years, so I try to put myself in others shoes. Good communication trumps everything in all lanes with everybody.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The story I hope people tell about me when I’m gone, is whatever story makes them smile or laugh when they think about me.
