We recently had the chance to connect with Mr. Darian Marcelous Sr. and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darian, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
My mental health.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Marcelous Remodeling has been striving for 8 years now! Full of ups and downs but very thankful for where it’s at today. I’m a residential contractor fulfilling the request of my homes. No jobs are too small not too big. While attention to detail being at the top of my priority list, it still comes second to customer service. I serve the people who God leads me to, so like everyone else, I treat them with care. I do not have a go to category within the construction field as I like to be versatile and open to all that comes my way. But if I do have to choose a specialty, it’d be custom building/woodworking.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
As a kid maybe 6-8 years old when my mom would always ask me to assemble her bookshelves, end tables, or hang a picture. She knew she could depend on me to do it right and complete the task and that made me feel powerful!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, when nothing was working in my favor. I could not land any jobs and all my peers had no contracts going. Feeling empty and helpless not being able to provide for my family. Second guessing decisions to be an entrepreneur/business owner. Finances were drained with nothing to show for. Sold tools to make income and became very depressed. I had to really reevaluate my life choices personally and professionally.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That it’s easy! Lol
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, that’s called integrity. I feel everyone has it, but it’s not always used. There’s been numerous of times where I’ve seen “extra” problems on a job site and just take care of it because I know it’s the right thing to do or it’s to function properly with what I’m working on. My conscience won’t let me sleep well at night knowing I could have done something better and didn’t. Whether I’m asked to or not, it doesn’t matter to me.
