Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Keith.
Angela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After retiring as an AMA/WMA Professional Motocross racer, and suffering through a devastating car accident where I had to learn how to walk again, I took my competitive and artistic personality and attended the Aveda Institute to study Cosmetology. I’ve worked in salons and barbershops in Houston, TX, and Los Angeles, CA where I perfected my craft in different areas, ways and experiences. I’ve had the pleasure to work with celebrities and at live broadcast events, as well as with fitness models and fashion models during photoshoots and fashion shows. Currently, my main focus is providing exceptional hair and makeup styling for weddings, events, and photoshoots, however, I am always looking for an exciting new experience and/or challenge. It’s not a job when you truly love what you do.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve had my ups and downs, especially while moving states and/or salons. I’ve worked my way up from an apprentice to an upper-level stylist before branding myself and branching off on my own. Every experience and hardship has shaped me and my craft and lead me to continue following my dream. There’s no limit to what you can achieve in this industry as long as you are willing to put the work in. It’s a trade that you can take with you anywhere, and that’s one of the things I love most about my industry.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with AKStyles – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a well-rounded hairstylist and makeup artist. I feel my specialties are bridal makeup and styling, as well as men’s grooming and styling. I studied and perfected the craft of the vintage/rockabilly styles, but still love the natural beachy styles. I’m most proud of my experience gained working in Los Angeles where I had the chance to provide my services for on-camera and live broadcast events while working at the YouTube center and for companies like Disney and Microsoft. My perfectionism and love of my craft is what sets me apart, I take my time during consultations to listen to what my client really wants so that they as are happy with our end result as I am.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Unfortunately, I have experienced a lot of factors where it’s about “who you know”, but fortunately being a female in my industry is not a disadvantage. I think there are equal opportunities but also feel that at most times, it’s easier to relate and open up to a woman about your appearance which is ultimately what I’m focusing and working with a client on. It’s easier to relate to someone who has experienced and can share the feelings that can arise from one’s appearance. There’s no greater feeling than providing a simple service to boost one’s confidence and empowerment.
